I searched and didn't see a thread for the new Pride and Prejudice movie. So, for those of you that have seen it, is it any good? I see that it's only a hair over 2 hours long. Do they leave a lot out compared to the BBC miniseries (the one with Colin Firth)? I love that version so I'm a little afraid I'll be disappointed with this new one. Tell me what you think...

There is some discussion in this thread: http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=10476&highlight=pride+Prejudice
I didn't plan to see it (because I love the recent-ish BBC one), but I think I have been persuaded. If I see it soon (I may wait for on demand), I'll report back.

Thanks bookworm. I read that thread and it answered some of my worries. I guess I'll see it anyway and I do like Keira Knightley. I've also read the book a few times and the BBC version is so complete. I guess I'll just have to see the new version with an open mind. And it will be nice to see a pretty Jane who was supposed to have been the beauty of the Bennet family. If anyone else has seen it, feel free to post your thoughts.

I haven't seen the BBC version (next on my netflix list, though!), but I have read the book a couple times. If you're a fan of the book, I don't see how you could not see this movie just because I find it so interesting to see someone else's interpretation of a work I love.
With that said, the movie was a bit lacking. It really failed to develop how Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's feelings for each other came to be. A lot of the bantering that takes place in the book that really helps you see them connecting is left out, so you're kind of left wondering, "Why did they fall in love?" I was also not fond of the casting of Mr. Bingley. He came off as a lot more boyish and silly than I had imagined him to be.
However, while the first half hour I was cringing at these things, the movie did pick up and became much more enjoyable to watch from there on.
DH has never read the book and he said he actually liked the movie, but he could tell quite a bit was left out.

houseblend-The BBC version is great. It's long but it's also very comprehensive. Mr. Darcy and Lizzie have a lot of chemistry and I just think it's great. One of my top 3 favorite movies. My DH refuses to see the theater version so I'm seeing it with my mom. And DH won't watch the BBC version because he knows I'm slightly in love with Colin Firth. :p I applaud your man if he will sit through 6 hours of Jane Austen!

I love the BBC version so much, I find it hard to really anticipate this one, but I'll go because I am obsessed with all things Austen!

I saw it because it is still one of my favorite stories of all time. I also loved the BBC version and I knew I would have problems with the movie but I was curious just the same. I agree with whoever said Mr. Bingley was annoying. I loved the actor (Helena Bonham Carter's brother) in the BBC series, he always makes me smile when he is on screen. I did however like the new Jane, not better, but she was sweet. I didn't mind Darcy either, but Colin Firth was perfect for the part so...
What I did like were the settings and costumes, it seemed much more "organic". It's always interesting to see somone elses view of the whole thing. I noticed that certain important scenes that couldn't be left out, took place in areas different than the BBC version. For instance the scene of Darcy and Elizabeth's fight when he proposed for the first time took place outside in this movie instead of in Charlotte's parlor in the BBC version...that happened alot.
