A letter I wrote to SIL
SIL and FBIL,
This is a list of all the Bay Area photographers who were popular on the Wedding Channel boards in 2003. I haven’t followed wedding trends that closely over the last two years, but keep in mind that narrative or photojournalistic style was very popular at the time, sepia and hand-colored makes me retch, and that in ‘dem days not many photographers were doing digital. These days most do digital or a combination - medium format for portraits and digital for everything else. That means you get a lot more pictures usually. Pita and I wanted very good pictures of our reception. We didn’t look closely at formals, stuck them on as an afterthought and didn’t make a list of shots for the photographer. We only had $2500 for photo and video both so we didn’t look at packages including albums, second photographers, etc. I made a shortlist of photographers, and then Pita looked at the online portfolios and we pared it down that way. It was important to us to get negatives. We looked for someone who had worked as a society photographer and as a photojournalist with published work. We didn’t want someone who had mostly worked as a studio or fine art photographer, or whose personal work was mostly landscapes or still life or animals. Most important, if someone is going to hang around all day they have to be easy going.
