Am I the only one who does this? I have a few books & series that I love. I guess this sounds wierd but I will make a point to reread them once a year. I love the stories and the characters so much that I want to revisit them. I read other books too - new and old - but every so often I have to go back to my faves.
The two series I read every year: Earth's Children by Jean M. Auel (5 books) and Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon (5 books - w/ a 6th out in Sept!)
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else liked to reread their favorites on a regular basis?

Yes, I'm a chronic re-reader :).
Can you tell me the order of the Outlander books? I've read the first one twice, then stop b/c I can't figure out what's next. I've looked on amazon, but I don't even know all the names (though I have a few in dusty piles) so that hasn't quite helped!

Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Chronicles of Narnia
Anne of Green Gables (i just love how she and Gilbert end up together in Anne of the Island--my favorite book of that series!)

I read The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks over and over again.
I wish I could read the Outlander series again, but the size of the books are so daunting. I'm dying for the next book to come out (finally), although, the last one was pretty disappointing IMO.

I reread the Outlander books. Mostly because there is so much time inbetween books that I forget what happened.
I've also reread almost all of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich just because they're so darn funny.

I reread the Outlander books. Mostly because there is so much time inbetween books that I forget what happened. I think this is how I started the rereading - everytime a new one comes out I have to rearead the rest to make sure I'm caught up on anything I might have forgotten.
bookworm - The order of the books is:
Outlander (1992)
Dragonfly in Amber (1993)
Voyager (1994)
Drums of Autumn (1996)
The Fiery Cross (2002)
Leslie - I have The Notebook on my To Read list. I've heard so many good things about it (mostly from WC readers!)
Sevilla - do you read the Narnia books in the old order (the one that starts with The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) or the new release order (the one that starts with The Magicians Nephew) ? My SS was reading these for school and I was a bit dismayed to discover they reordered them.

Depends on which time ;). This latest time just last month i read them in the old order. I just was so excited to see the trailer for The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe Movie that i started with that one. Though in middle school i reordered them chronilogically.
Honestly, i like them in the old order better--especially since the last two books are a 'first and last' set.

I reread a lot. It's the only good thing about not being able to remember a plot. :) Some favorites:
Outlander Series
Harry Potter
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan books
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Red Tent
I reread the Narnia and Anne of Green Gables constanly as a kid/teen. I should look at them again.

I never answered my re-reads (but I think I put some of them in another thread). I re-read most books, actually, but the ones I do as tradition are
-The Rosamunde Pilcher "big" books (The Shell Seekers, September, and Coming Home)
-The Saving Graces
-Little Women
-Pride & Prejudice
-Gone with the Wind

Definitely the "Outlander" series - but not the whole book(s). Usually just the parts that are my favorite :)
Also the "In death" series by J.D. Robb, but not all of them because I think she's up above 20 books now.
I currently rereading Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series. The 3rd book came out Tuesday, and after I enjoyed it so much, I had to immediately reread the first two!
I also make it a point to reread Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series before a new book comes out, but he said the 4th book will be the last in that series for a while, so I guess I just have to read them again for the fun of it! :D

Ooh the notebook. The book is soooo much better than the movie (don't get me wrong, i loved the movie, it was just kinda different)
Othello (shakespeare) mmmm.
Anne of Green Gables et al. . ahhhh. :)

oooh, The Notebook book was soooooo good -- I was crying!!! My other friends said the movie was nowhere as good, I have yet to see the movie because of that.
THis is probably funny, but I have reread the entire Nancy Drew series ( you know the yellow hardbacks) a few times.
the Wrinkle in Time series by Madeleine L'Engle
Occassionally I thumb through some of the Anne Rice books (I loved Mayfair Witches)
the North and South trilogy by John Jakes

My two favorites to read & reread have been mentioned
Anne of Green Gables (esp. Anne of the Island as Sevilla mentioned!)
Any of the Madeline L'Engle series, Wrinkle in Time, Swiftly Tilting Planet, etc.
I also have been known to read several other books over and over including
Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins
London Transports by Maeve Binchy
and when I was a kid I'd read the Little House on the Prarie books over and over!

the Wrinkle in Time series by Madeleine L'Engle
Have you read any of her other books too? I just really enjoy her as an author. The Other Side of the Sun and A Two PArt Invention: The Story of a Marriage are both really good. 2 Part Invention is her memoirs of her marriage and life with her husband and is SO sweet and powerful. She's really old now--i think about 90?

I've read all of her "young adult" stuff, but not her more "adult" stuff. I might have to see if the local library carries it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've reread those books as well. I read, ALOT. And everytime a new one comes out, I go back and read the previous one so that I can remember what happened in it. I love her books...
I've also reread the Kay Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell. Addicted to that series

Harry Potter, but that's pretty much the norm, it seems ;)
I forgot about Anne of Green Gables! I mean, I didn't FORGET about those books, just how much I love them! I've read them a few times, but it's summer, so it might be time for another read. (After HP and the HBP, of course ;))
Okay, and I don't have this book anymore, but YEARS ago I read Are you there God? It's me, Margaret AT LEAST a dozen times ;)
How hard are the LOTR/Tolkien books, really? I am in serious love with the story from the movies, and I'd like to think I could handle the books, but with a toddler I just don't know if I have the brain power it would take. My friend bought me The Hobbit to 'get me started', but I haven't even cracked that open, yet.

When I was younger I reread TLOTR series quite a few times...I tried to do it before the movies came out to compare, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I've read it too many times?
I also used to read Anne of Green Gables ALL the time. L.M. Montgomery had another series about a girl named Emily that I read quite a bit. I can't remember the names of those books, but I have them packed away somewhere.
Anyway, now I reread:
Gone With the Wind
Summer Sisters by Judy Blume
Any of my easy to read romances: The Notebook, The Wedding
The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub
Any of the Ya Ya books
Am I the only one who liked The Notebook movie better than the book?

I usually read Summer Sisters and Bag of Bones every summer. I have also read To Kill a Mockingbird several times, and Catcher in the Rye.
I can read anything by Stephen King over and over. I also like to go back and read books from when I was little.
To my classes I always read Mrs. Piggle Wiggle and Sideways Stories from Wayside School.
One book I've read a lot that I HATE is Candide. I had to read it for so many high school and college classes. I will never touch that book again!

If I have nothing new to read in the house, I'll re-read just about anything. But the ones that I read at least once a year are the Anne of Green Gables series and Emily of New Moon series (both by L.M. Montgomery) and the Little Women/Little Men books. Oh, and I've read the Belgariad several times, too, to get a light & fluffy fantasy fix.

Totally. Seeing as it's winter here, nothing better than curling up on the couch with a warm drink and a favourite old book :D
AusMarchBride, I was thinking the other day how much I would like to re-read my Little House on the Prairie books but I have no idea where they are. They used to be one my standard re-reads. I miss them :(
Right now, my favorite re-reads are the Shopaholic series (my username is actually Rebecca's nickname :p ) and the Nora Robert's Irish Trilogy Series.
DH thinks I'm nuts for re-reading the same books over and over :p

I actually went out a few years ago and bought the later ones in the series, I had lent/lost my copies. I felt a little odd at my age (would have been in my early 30s lol).
You can now buy a boxed set on Amazon which is pretty good value at
USD 40.00 with free shipping. Amazon Little House Boxed Set (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0064400409/qid=1120711500/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-2734060-0459325)
Thanks AusMarchBride ! There are also a couple of sets going on Ebay also.

I don't know if these count, but I've read and reread the Patricia Cornwell "Kay Scarpetta" series. I think a new one is coming out.
As for a mini-series, I have read both Bridget Jones' books over and over and over and over again.
I started with Janet Evanovich's series, but only made it to the 2nd book. We had a book club with the company I worked and I started it there, then left the company.

Just wanted to chime in that I, too, love re-reading the Little House on the Prarie series. I remember wanting to be a pioneer when I was a kid, riding along in a covered wagon!
I bought the set off eBay a few years back, but have no idea where they are now. :(
Another favorite that I don't know if any other CC'ers have read is Behold your Queen by Gladys Malvern about Esther. It's out of print now (I bought mine off eBay for way too much money after first reading it as a 5th grader) but I LOVE the book and re-read it every year.

I re-read just about every book in my personal collection at least once a year. But my number one, all time, must read over and over again, is:
The Stand by Stephen King (the un-cut version)
This book's characters, storyline, even the places where it's all set, have extradinorary depth and richness to it. I have read this book at least 10 times, and I swear, I discover some tiny little detail that I missed every time. Plus, if you are a fan of Stephen King and you are paying attention; he weaves in characters, places and bits and pieces from some of his other books into this one. It's fun to see the reference and know exactly where it's coming from.

All Creatures Great and Small series

Anything by Rosamunde Pilcher - I've read The Shell Seekers, September, Coming Home & Winter Solstice so many times that DH rolls his eyes when ever I get them off the book shelf :)
The Little House books - my sister and I used to wear our nightgowns and winterboots because we thought we looked like Laura and Mary :o
Anne of Green Gables - although I haven't read them in years
The Harry Potter books - it's Sunday and I still haven't got the new one

I absolutely love all of Laurie Notaro's books. Her series is called something like Diaries of a Loudmouth Girl.
The books are titled:
We thought you'd be prettier
Diary of a Fat Bride
I love Everybody and Other Atrocious Lies
They are so funny and it is just a compilation of all of the embarassing crap she goes through and her venting about the things that annoy her. It is like all of my secret vindictive thoughts were published for us all to laugh at. It is definitely a great book for a plane or trip because they are a short read.

I'm re-reading the Harry Potter books now, but I also love to read and re-read the Anne of Green Gables series.
Rosamunde Pilcher's Shell Seekers and September series (well, not really a series, but I always felt like September was sort of a sequel to The Shell Seekers) is always worth a re-read.
Jean M. Auel's Earth's Children Series is also good. I always enjoy re-reading those books.
And finally, I like to read and re-read Maeve Binchy's series that includes Tara Road, The Evening Class, Scarlett Feather, and Quentin's. It's not really a chronological series, but you see someone who was a central character in one book in another book, and you sort of see how their story ended up.

Hands down: George R.R. Martin's (http://www.georgerrmartin.com/) A Song of Ice & Fire series. I never even liked fantasy before I read this series, but now it is my only reread. If you like gritty fantasy (low magic/blue-flames shooting out of people's fingers quotient) it might be something to check out. If anyone is interested, the book to start with is A Game Of Thrones (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0553573403/qid=1124325379/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-9197850-9883032?v=glance&s=books&n=507846).

I like that alot of us reread books we read and loved as kids.
I have a couple preteen books I keep and every once in a while I'll pick them up.
The House with a Clock in it's Walls
The Letter, The Witch and The Ring
The Curse of the Blue Figurine
The Mummy, The Will & The Crypt
These are all by John Bellairs - for kid's mysteries, you can't go wrong with any of his books and I'd recommend them to anyone with kids.

I'm a big series re-reader. I like to read them over when I finally have all of them and can go straight from one book to another. It gives a great sense of continuity.
Anne of Green Gables, of course
Emily of New Moon (also by LM Montgomery)
Robert Parker's Spenser books (starting with the Godwulf Manuscript, right up until now)
John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series
Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone series
Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series
Tony Hillerman's Jim Chee/Joe Leaphorn books
Mostly I like series where there's ongoing character development and growth.
I tend to reread the Outlander series an the HP series just before the newest book comes out (or at least the last 2 or 3) so I know where I am at the start of the new book.

Danielle Steele's No Greater Love (the Titanic one)
Little Women

plays: Romeo & Juliet, The Crucible, A Doll's House (I really don't know why.)

MsPeachy -- It is The Voyage by Philip Caputo: It's the story of 3 teenage boys (like 16, 14 and 12?) who get sent off by their father the summer of 1900. He packs them up in the family schooner (huge old sailboat) and tells them not to come until September -- and they have no idea why they have to go, or where they're supposed to go. Dad is very gruff. ;) They end up deciding to retrace one of his most famous old sailing expeditions, to try to understand him and discover themselves, and go all the way down the eastern coast (from Maine I believe) to Florida, meeting up with many storms, unkown family members, and other problems on the way. The story is told by one of the sons' granddaughters, who has come across the story present day and is trying to find out what happened -- why were they sent off, what actually happened to them on the trip. It's all in the context of family history, complex old secrets, and obviously the perseverence and strength of these boys. So powerful and engaging.
The only warning I give people is that a little bit of nautical knowledge will come in handy while reading; as these boys are really sailing, old-school, there are a lot of "technical" terms -- you can absolutely understand the story without the knowledge; it will just make some of the scenes a little more vivid if you know what a sextant does and where on the boat is the mainsail halyard. That sort of thing. It's just awesome. Everyone in my family devoured it.
Jimmysgirl-- LOL! The other two I have read and read and read are Jewels and Mixed Blessings. I liked most of what she wrote that decade ;) Don't think I've ever read Thurston House, though -- have to look that one up.
bookworm: when "You've Got Mail" came out, and they are in the Fox Books and that lady asks the clerk about the Shoes books, I swear to you that in the theater, I said out loud "Noel Streatfield!" before Meg Ryan did :D Those were just such awesome books. Why are they still out of print??!!

And, someone just reminded me of the other one I re-read often:
Colony by Anne Rivers Siddons. I get on a real southern lit kick from time to time, and this one always comes back.. It's awesome.
Also, Beach Music by Pat Conroy. To think that any guy can write a story about guys with so much sensitivity and beauty... This is definitely on my top 10 list.

The Dark Tower series is my favorite series ever. Never has a book made me cry so much (DT7).
My other "re-read" books are also Stephen King -- The Stand, It, no other author makes me care about characters so much. I find it absolutely amazing.
Other than that, the Harry Potter Books, Snow Falling on Cedars, To Kill a Mockingbird...

I love this series too :)

The Dark Tower series is my favorite series ever. Never has a book made me cry so much (DT7). You know, I was seriously unhappy with that book. I didn't care for the ending and in a way, it felt like SK took the easy way out with the plot. I sort of know why he did it and think that he feels the story is allegorical for his own life and how he started the story like 20 years ago or whatever but it still felt like a cop out to me. I loved all the books except that last one with Drawing of the Three being my overall favorite.

I agree that it wasn't the best! It was the death situations that really got to me. I felt like some of my best friends were dying. I agree that it was a pretty cop out ending. I kept telling myself if it was ANYTHING other than the loop ending, I'd be happy. d'oh! The Waste Lands was my favorite, I loved how much crazy stuff happened :)
