I have a cotton twill sofa set in a color that I am tired of because it is too neutral. We're moving within the year and I don't want to get new living room furniture because it may not fit or look right in a different setting.

When you walk into someone's living room and see slipcovers, do you automatically think they are cheap? Does anyone have the SureFit ones and what do you think of them?

Personally, I tried a couple of slipcovers and I could never get them to fit right. They were either too baggy and came untucked or the corners were a bit off. I love the look of them in the catalogs, but I could never get them to look the same. Kind of like trying to do your hair the next day after being at a salon. :D I think that if it is a set that you don't sit on very often, it might work, but otherwise you might spend a lot of time fixing it. Although, there might be some others here with really good tricks to keep it tucked in and tight!

I have some and well you can tell they are covers. I agree that you just cant keep them tucked in if it is couch you use every day. In my house they look better than my tacky print on my furniture but as soon as we have money to buy new furniture we will. The ones we have are surefit and probably stay in place longer but they just still dont look like they do in the magazine!

Which ones do you have? I was thinking of getting this but in a different color:

After reading your posts, I'm hesitant. Maybe I should check out getting the sofas re-upholstered.

I have the same problem too! From what I understand, you roll up a magazine and tuck them on the side and back of your seat cushion and this will preven them from un tucked...

First I would look into how much it costs to get the sofa re-upholstered. If you can find it for cheap, go for that instead.

We have a surefit and well, it looks like a cover. It wouldn't be so bad if the cat didn't insist on using the inside of the couch as his hiding spot, but I can't manage to get him to stop. He literally pushes up the cushions, knocks them down, and climbs in and goes to sleep for hours.

I haven't even bothered trying the magazine thing bc of the cat. BTW you need to actually put some rubber bands around the magazine for them to stay in place. My sister did this and she really likes it.

We have this one:

We have a loveseat and it's too wide actually so you see the folds on the backrest. Also, I think I must have tucked too much and tied the bows too tight at some point bc now one of the bows is coming unstitched and I have to sew it back on.

We have the Sure-fit stretch pique in Antique on both our sofa and loveseat. They stay down really well with the magazine rolled up in the back, and since they're form fitting, its not majorly noticeable that its a slipcover. We like ours since you just pop them off and into the wash and back on. Really extends the life of the cushion fabric with animals in the house.

The thing I like most about that one is that they are soft. I am a big texture person and I like all things SOFT that I touch. :D
Its July and I keep a microsuede down comforter on the bed.

I had a SureFit slipcover for my couch a few years ago. It looked great, as long as no one sat on it. (It was one of the velvet looking ones with the ties on the arms.) I even bought the little plastic/rubber thingies you were supposed to tuck inbetween and behind the cushions to hold it in place, and it just didn't work. I was constantly "fixing" it, and it also ripped at a couple of the seams from my roommates' friends lounging on it with the cover all askew.

I would not order one again, although the stretchy one does look intriguing.

Okay, what is this magazine trick you all are talking about?

I have a slipcover because right now I can't afford a new couch and the couch we have was starting to look worn. It looks better with the cover on. Also, in my case, I figured I'd rather spend about $50 (what I got if for on sale at Target) for a slipcover as opposed to paying someone to re-upholster a couch that is already not very comfortable. My problem is that I really only want a couch from Room & Board which will cost a fortune, not to mention at this point DH and I don't agree on the style of couch. So, for now a $50 slipcover will have to do. Yes, I do have to readust constantly which gets really annoying. Yes, it does look like a slipcover. I still think it's okay and I am not too worried about people thinking I might be cheap. I'd say if you are planning to get a new couch, but don't really want to until you move (understandable), as annoying as slipcovers can be, I am sure you can live with it for a year. If it weren't for the fact that you said you're planning to move and don't feel like buying the couch until later I would say just buy a new couch if you can afford it.

Basically, you just roll up few magazines and tuck them in around the cushions to keep the slipcover in place. You can also use sections of PVC pipe to do the same thing.

We had great luck with the Surefit slipcover we had. It was a great deal, but also so much nicer than the covers we saw anywhere else in a similar price range. :)

Surefit now has slipcovers with separate covers for the cushions, which I think would fix a lot of problems. Also, you can buy these little twist pins that work WAY better than magazines to hold the slipcover in place. Use those pins every few inches and the cover will not move!

We had the SureFit chenille courderoy couch and oversized chair covers. They definitely looked and fit the best after a wash and a fresh tuck, but I didn't really mind. One thing you can do, aside from a rolled magazine, is tuck a long piece of PVC pipe or a shower rod behind the bottom cushions. I think the pipe would be cheaper.

Those stretch ones look neat too.

Just bumping this up because my DH and I finally decided on a couch -- this Simmons Softee (http://promotions.jenniferfurniture.com/promo_softee_sofabed.php) -- and it has narrow, square arms. Almost all of the slipcovers we've seen are shown on sofas with rounded/rolled arms, and we're wondering if they would fit on the one we're getting. Most of the SureFit ones (http://www.surefit.net/shop/category/sofa--chair---loveseat-slipcovers/soft-suede.cfm?sku=26185) claim that they fit various arm styles, but we don't want to have to pad the arms to get it to work.

Does anyone have any experience/advice?

TIA!
