In North Carolina, it went up about 10 cents this past week.

The cheapest kind (regular, I think) is $2.15/gallon.

How much is it where you are? Who has the most expensive gas in their area?

In Tucson, we range from 2.14 (Albertsons) to 2.49 (Chevron).

Gas Buddy (http://www.gasbuddy.com/) is a cool website that allows you to compare gas prices in your city. You'll always know where the cheapest gas is!

We're hovering around $2.15-2.20 right now in metro Detroit although the prices don't bother me so much considering we just moved back from Germany and gas over there is close to $5.00 a gallon!!! So this is cheap for me. :p

mmeblue
07-01-2005, 06:04 AM
The station in my area that's usually the cheapest is at $2.18. What I find weird is that the last few times we've gone to Georgia, it's no better there - before the last few months, it was usually 20 cents less as soon as we crossed the state line. So either the people in GA are getting gouged more than usual, or we in FL are getting a break...but I miss being able to get it cheaper on trips.

myshel
07-01-2005, 07:22 AM
In Eastern Iowa, the mid-grade gas is running between $2.02 and $2.09 a gallon depending on where you go. The low grade gas is about 5-7 cents more than the mid-grade and premium runs about 10-15 cents more than the mid-grade.

Iowans are lucky in the sense that our mid-grade gas has ethanol in it which keeps the cost down somehow.

If I go west about 5 miles (toward Winchester) I can get it for a whole penny less at the Shell station, and THREE pennies less at the Sheetz station. Something need to happen otherwise people are going to be going broke real fast! That's easy. Basically if gas prices stay this high in the US, ppl will start doing what the Europeans do and 1) start investing in more fuel-efficient cars and/or 2) finding alternate means of transport like scooters and public transport.

SUVs are practically unheard of here in Italy. I know it's like this in France too. They sell them but no one buys them (unless you live in the mountains). They simply consume too much gas. And no one has 4WD or AWD here. That consumes gas as well. Also, we use manual shift cars as automatic transmissions consume more as well.

FWIW, cheap gas here is running 1.20 euro per liter. That's about $5.70 per gallon. But I've seen it much higher... closer to 1.30 euro per liter which is about $6.18 per gallon.

Based on today's exchange rate (1.1792)... I paid $3.39 US a Gallon for gas. (in south western Ontario)

(105.9cents Canadian per liter)

The part that peeves me off the most... yesterday I filled up for 91.9 cents a liter which is $2.95 per gallon.

How can it justifiably go up that much overnight? Yes, crude oil prices are rising... but a rise of a few cents per barrel should not equate to an immediate raise at the pumps since the gas we used today was actually bought MONTHS ago in the barrel!

I didn't understand this until I worked at a gas station, but the reason you see an immediate increase at the pump is the gas in underground tank is there on consignment from the distributer. The gas truck comes and fills it up and the gas station is charged for the amt of gas that was missing. The other 1000s of gallons are the property of the company that brought it there so when they send a price change notice we had to change it at the pumps or we would be loosing money on any that we sold.

Thats why I was screaming REGULATION a few pages back so that the distribution houses can't raise their prices more than 10 cents a day. Gas station owners make at most a penny a gallon profit. Thats why they sell pop and snacks. If you want to be mad at the gas station don't buy their fountain pop which is like a 90-200 percent mark up on what they pay for that box of syrup ;)

I spent many years working at 2 different gas stations and I so had to second Lindsey's thoughts!! Hit them where it hurts, don't buy the convenience items. That is where they make their money. There is no mark-up on gas prices at all really. The basic breakdown of gasoline prices are as follows(%'s are approximate):
44%-Crude Oil
27%-State & Federal Taxes
15%-Refining
16%-Marketing & Distribution
2%-Profit

I also think that if we could make a more universal grade/blend of gas, that prices could come down, instead of having to have 35 different blends for every season!

I just heard on my commute this morning that the price of crude is going down in "anticipation" of the end of the US summer driving season.

Some guy named Craig Smith, apparently a gas expert/financial analyist, is saying that by this time next year we will be paying up to 5 bucks a gallon. If terrorists hit an oil field, we'll pay 10 bucks a gallon. Of course, he blames the Democrats' environmental activism for this. But he was apparently dead on this year, he predicted the price would peak in late summer of 2005 at nearly 3 bucks a gallon and per national average he was exactly right.

I swear....THIS is why I am a stay at home mom...I can not afford to work!! I would not even be making enough to hardly pay for gas, let alone daycare. And we do not have taxis, subways, buses, trains, carpools or any other type of public transportation here, so we have no choice to drive, especially because for me to get to any kind of job? It is at least a 10 minute drive doing 70 mph on the freeway! And there is no way I'm carting 2 kids behind a bike for 7 miles to a sitter, then 14 miles to work from that point. And that would be to simply make $6.75 an hour!! If I want a "real" job, I'd have to drive at least a half hour on the freeway doing 70!!

Well well well. Apparently two major pipelines to NC are now closed and we have two weeks worth of reserves. Since that time, one local gas station ran out of all gas (except Diesel) and there are extremely long lines at the pump. The cheapest we've found it for is $2.99 (which is great compared to some areas). I'm just glad my husband switched jobs (no driving).

at about 6pm in NH gas prices were about $2.99 for the lowest grade :(

The mobile down the street seemed to be having a crisis, and only the most expensive gas grade pumps were working. They lowered the mose expensive price down to $1.89 due to the fact that they didn't want to be a gas nazi, and I pulled in quick and filled up...the less expensive grades were more at $2.99+.

I filled up on plus at 5:30pm at 2.68....went to the same station (I walked) to pick something up at their store at 8:30pm....it was already 2.91....

If anyone is interested in learning a bit about the gas business and how the stations are actually not trying to rip us off....check out the last page of my journal

*edited to add* I filled up with plus b/c the station was out of regular when I was there at 5:30....and there was still a line!

Be back tomorrow to see how it is going....

As of 4 pm, $2.75 a gallon here in my area.

I live in Northern NJ. This is going to kill the middle and working class poor. Factor in that lots of people in this area do not have a workplace that is accessable by mass transportation. If they can't carpool with a coworker, they're stuck making the haul to the company by themselves in their own car.

I am looking for a full time job -- I am limiting my search to within 10 miles of where I live.

At the station closest to my house (usually cheapest on this side of town), it was $3.21 this afternoon, up from $2.57 this morning, I think. I went to a station close to where I work, and it was still down at $2.61 there - lines were really long, but people were still being nice to each other, which was good. Actually, the $2.61 was for regular, which they were out of, but the mid-grade was $2.71 - still better than the $3.21 from the place I usually go!
