I'm going next Wednesday!
I think it is amazing that it's Joaquin and Reese doing the singing and playing instruments and that they learned to do so for this role.

Yes, DH and I are going tonight! I was very shocked when I found out they were doing their own singing. I'm glad, although I can't imagine Joaquin Phoenix singing bass like Johnny Cash. I'm really looking forward to it.

an old friend of mine from high school is Vivian Cash (his first wife) in the movie. Her name is Ginnifer Goodwin. She was in Mona Lisa Smile, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton and used to be on Ed.
Here's her pic:

Let me know how she does.

DH and I want to see this movie...but we're opting for Harry tonight. I would love to know people's opinions. I've heard and watched clips from the movie and Joaquin's voice is really low, I was surprised too, to find out it was his own.
I saw it and it was great. RW & JP have great chemistry, especially when they are performing together. JP sounded just like Johnny Cash.
Southener- Your friend did really good. I don't anything about Vivian Cash but it seemed like they wrote the role to be pretty naggy & somewhat bitchy to make you feel more sympathetic to Johnny Cash falling in love with June.

DH & I are going tomorrow night to see it. I actually first heard about the movie because Johnny Cash's daughter was upset how they protrayed her mother.

I hadn't read anything about the movie other than it was being made. I can understand what she means. I don't think there was one positive scene between Johnny & Vivian other than their first scene. There was a reason he married her and had three kids. They should have shown something, IMO.
ETA - I noticed it was based on two books written by Johnny Cash so maybe that had something to do with it. He was obviously very much in love with June.

I loved the movie. I couldn't believe that it wasn't Johnny Cash singing.
About the portrayal of Vivian Cash - I didn't see the portrayal all that negatively. She wanted a husband who would provide for her and their growing family. Then she got upset about the groupies, the drugs, and an affair with June. IMHO, I think she reacted appropriately and her portrayal just made John look like a heel who was dumping his family for some ego trip.

Saw the movie and LOVED it!!!
I thought Vivian was protrayed how she should have been. I didn't think she was negative at all. She reacted how alot of women would have, IMO.

I saw the movie today and thought it was really fantasic. It has my vote for Oscar. Reese is one of my favorite actresses and I thought this was the role/performance of her life. Amazing portrayal. Joaquin also deserves high praise for his performance. Totally believable.

for those of you who have seen it...how did Ginnifer Goodwin do? She played Vivian and I posted a pic of her above.

I think she had a great performance. The character was annoying to me, but not because of her!

Excellent movie! I saw it last weekend with a girlfriend and will likely go with hubby tomorrow to see it again. Joaquin did an AWESOME job portraying Johnny, I was very impressed with how he nailed down even just the singing portion of the movie. He sounded so much like Johnny I was amazed! I see an Oscar in his future...

I really enjoyed it and DH mostly enjoyed it. His only complaints were that the movie ended too abruptly and that he hadn't realized the movie was focusing on one facet of Johnny Cash's life (his love affair with June.) We both were impressed with their singing.
Two things I noticed about the movie:
* Larry from BTVS was the bass player
* It seemed they only mentioned Johnny Cash's one daughter's name, Roseanne, throughout the film. And I think I remember hearing the name Cindy once. Did the other two daughters, Kathy and Tara not give their permission to have their names used? I know Kathy was upset at the way Vivian Carter was portrayed.

Saw the movie this weekend - LOVED IT!
DH is the biggest Johnny Cash fan & I remember my grandmother playing Carter Family tapes when I was a child.
DH and I have been singing "Jackson" all weekend - I think we'll go on tour soon! ;)

Saw it yesterday and really liked it. SO wasn't as impressed, but I thought everyone did great jobs. I was skeptical about Reese Witherspoon playing June Carter, but I thought she was fabulous!
Ginnifer Goodwin did great. I don't think she was portrayed badly. I just think she was frustrated and felt like she couldn't do much about it in the early days of their marriage.

i tried to be sympathetic towards Vivian Cash in the movie, but I couldn't, and it seriously troubled me, becuase johnny's behaviour was appalling!..... i have no idea what the woman is like in real life, but in the movie it seemed that she provided no support for her husband whatsoever and was more concerned with having babies -- and while yes, i'd be mighty pissed about the groupies, the drugs, etc... etc... i got the impression that he may have turned to other women (june) and the drugs as a way of getting the support he couldn't get at home. not that it makes it right, either.... just my thoughts.

Walk the Line just cleaned up at the Golden Globe nominations....Best Actor, Actress and Movie. I'm so excited for Reese and Jauquin (sp?). I'm a fan of both. I hope they win at the GG's and do just as well at Oscar time.

I wanna know why they got nominated in the Musical/Comedy category though. I mean I know there is a lot of music in the film, but I would have thought it would be in the Drama category??

I didn't notice that! I was trying to remember everything that they were reading. That is strange.

I saw the movie this weekend. I have to say that I understand where Vivian would have been coming from. If my dh was on the road 1/2 the year, I would want him to be a father and a husband when he was home. Johnny Cash was supposed to be an act and JR is the man she married, when he brought Johny home she got frustrated and eventually fed up. I think it just showed how they weren't meant to be.

I'm sure they/studio people entered the movie in that category as maybe a better shot at winning a globe for best movie.
I believe producers/studios choose what category to be considered for, but I've been wrong before!!!
