I start the meal with solids and then finish with a regular bottle (FF).

Tracie - I don't think it's necessary to offer water, but you can. Usually, as long as baby stays hydrated through adequate formula/BM, you don't need to add water. That said, what we do is this: I feed Bennett his food, and when he's done eating, I have a water glass nearby with maybe an ounce or two of water in there and I let him experiment with drinking a couple sips if he's so inclined. (Sometimes, he wants nothing to do with the water glass, and I don't push it.) I usually nurse him or give him a bottle right after, so I do it to help "wash" out some of the food in his mouth before he latches onto my BB (since we've had problems with thrush). But it's not much at all - again, it's just for them to learn how to eat/drink like regular people.

I am a July 06 mom to be, and I wanted to stop by and ask you ladies a question.

How far in advance did you order your nursery furniture and are there certain stores that take longer than others to get the furniture in?

Thanks for the answers in advance:)

All of your babies are so cute, I can't wait till July. It seems so far away!

i just took catie for the last of her first round of shots (we are on a delayed schedule) and she weighed in at 18lbs and 27.5 inches so she only gained 1.5 pounds and 1/2 an inch in a month's time. someone here asked if anyone noticed a slow-down in their DC's growth so i just wanted to throw it out there. she is 5 and a half months.

i just spoke to my doctor about solids today. she didn't say anything about offering water. that said, i plan on BF first, then offering solids, then letting her play with her sippy cup (she does this already but is not good at it, obviously). she also loves to drink water from a cup so i will probably offer her a sip or two.

baby furniture: i bought mine at 26 weeks. i was told to buy it 12 weeks in advance but it came something like 16 weeks later. i bought mine at a private store and the crib was being imported from italy so that may have had to do w/ it. congratulations by the way!

Thanks for the info, ladies - you guys are great!

Baby Furniture - Mine took 12 weeks to come in. I ordered from a private store and the furniture was from Canada. I'm sure the chain stores like Babies R Us do not take as long.

Another question about plane travel - The airline rules state that you can bring an umbrella stroller to check at the gate. I have a regular stroller (Graco metrolite). Is that OK or do you really have to have one of those teeny $15 umbrella strollers? Thanks so much!

Ok, I have officially had my first overly worried new Mommy moment. Connor has had a bit of a cold. Generally he's in an ok mood, no fever, still sleeping semi-ok. Yesterday he spit-up/vomitted (not sure of the difference at this age) a few times and his nose has been stuffy. He woke up at 5am (usually sleeps until 8, YAWN). He went back down but his breathing sounded AWFUL. So, we went to the peds this morning, luckily they have Sunday hours. Good news, it's just a cold, phew. I was worried about RSV, pnuemonia, and all the other icky possabilities. He's still spitting up today and a little fussy but generally his charming self.
It annoyed me that DH didn't seem that worried about the whole thing. Sometimes I feel like a single parent.
I had them do a weight check since we were there. Connor is at 18lb. 8oz. WOW!!! No wonder my arms get sore.

Can't believe our babies are starting to eat!

Water - Have not offered water. I usually give him some formula after he eats. I'm actaully finding he's not that interested in his bottles much anymore.

Sippy Cup - Do not even own one at this point....

Baby Furniture Mine took 12 weeks to come in.

Question:I've been preparing my DS solids. I go to Whole Foods & buy fresh vegtables + fruits which I prepare using a steamer & food processor. My Ped said it was fine if I would like to prepare his food but that Earth's Best Jar food will also do the trick. Just curious -- What do you girls do?

DS does not go back to the ped till next week. Can't believe he's approaching the 6 month mark. He already has 2 teeth (bottom) coming in! He's rolling all over the place and grabbing everything in sight. He's been drooling like a champ these days as well.

We started Music class which he loves and tomorrow we're headed to Swimming class. Anyone else start doing classes?

Have a great week ladies

sippy cup Wondering if it's unrealistic/ridiculous to think that I might be able to avoid sippy cups altogether. Does anyone know what the benefits/drawbacks of sippy cups are? I've just been giving Bennett sips of water from a regular glass.

foods Kasia, I've been making most of my own foods, too. We just introduced sweet potatoes this morning, and I hadn't had the chance to prepare them just yet, so I gave Bennett half a jar of the Earth's Best Stage 1 sweet potatoes. He did not like it at all. My guess was that the Stage 1 foods are too watery, too pureed. I also tasted it - not very tasty. (Most of what I've been offering him has been the consistency of smushy oatmeal.) So we got sweet potatoes today and I nuked them, mashed them up and diluted it with a bit of water. I tasted this too - definitely tasted better. I made it to the consistency of mushy oatmeal - and he totally ate it up. Am wondering whether Stage 2 foods are a little less watery. Does anyone know?

This is a long way of saying - Jackson might take to the jarred foods all right, but I have a little gourmand on my hands.

classes - We thought about taking a sign language class, but it meets on Mondays at 9:30 am - prime nap time! Who does this? Who schedules a baby class during naptime?! We are, however, taking the continuation of our baby yoga class, Itsy Bitsy Yoga. We took the infant class and now we're going to the tot class. It's for crawlers, and starts in two weeks. Bennett's not crawling yet, but he's oh-so-close! that the instructor (same for both classes) told me to go ahead and sign up for the tot class.

Bennett is 6 months tomorrow! WOW. That is all. WOW.

Nancy - I had a very similar experience today. Katie woke up with a horrible sounding cough. I immediately called off work, called the daycare and called the doctor. My husband was just about as frantic as I was though. The doctor was probably laughing at me inside her head when she told me it was just a cold. I worry so much about lung things though! I am so prone to pneumonia, bronchitis and sinusitis, so I think she may be too.

She's fine - but is a little whiny and clingy. Speaking of which...

hi ladies
since being back at work I have just been reading along.. the weeks just fly now!

Orla is 6 months today! we had her apt this afternoon and she is 17lbs 7oz! and 26 inches.. can't believe how big she is getting

she was having a lot of formula issues so we didn't introduce solids till around Christmas and so far she has had peas (not a fan), sweet potatoes, apples, bananas (not a fan of) and we did the oatmeal and rice cereal in the beginning.

my husband works really long hours at the moment so I haven't been cooking dinner so we have done Earths Best for all the above and maybe when my husbands project dies down we can start cooking again and giving her our foods but I have a feeling we will be doing the jarred food for daycare

I was glad to read in here that some of the babies aren't into rolling - Orla never rolls.. she loves standing and can sit very well (doc was very impressed) and she said some just don't roll

she has had her 2 bottom teeth for about 2 months now and the doc could see her 2 front teeth

her sleep is all over the place - she seems to be hungry/waking up at 5 but she just stall her with the pacifier (doc said to ignore her but that might be hard since we are right next door). She does sleep thru some nights

anyway just wanted to say hi! can't wait to hear everyone's 6 month stats!
she is sleeping her shots off and haven't taken a pic yet today but here is one from Dec 26th

That is a gorgeous picture of Orla! She is beautiful!!

Baby Furniture-We only ordered a crib but it took about 6 months to come in! We weren't too thrilled about it, but it finally got here. Alex was already about 6 or 7 weeks old when it came.

Not too much going on. Alex just turned 5 months on Saturday (I know, he is the last one in here..so a little behind!) and I just can't believe it. Where is the time going?
Here are a few more pics. He just recently sat straight up this weekend. So cool!

Baby Food: We use Earth's Best. With DS, I used to make my own baby food... until I started analyzing the cost. My Whole Foods is incredibly expensive and it was honestly cheaper to buy jarred. When DS got older, I made brocooli, cauliflower, asparagus, mango, papaya, etc. for him since those items didn't come readily jarred and I wanted him to taste as many different flavors as possible. newyorkgirl: Yes, stage 2 jars are less watery but similar in taste to stage 1. Jackson liked a lumpier consistency as well so I just added rice cereal to his baby food.

Classes: We go to music class. I wish I had the type of baby who would cooperate during a stroller strides or yoga class. :( I wanted to take Cassidy to Gymboree but all of the classes that would work for us are during naptime. I think plenty of moms just sacrifice naptime for classes but my kids are SUCH creatures of routine/habit and they get SO cranky if they miss a nap that I could never do that.

Cassidy is 6 months old today! She can't sit up or roll over yet.... but I am not worried as her brother learned to sit up, roll over, crawl and pull up all within 3 weeks when he was 7 mos. old. Cassidy is also on her THIRD cold. Her brother has RSV and a double ear infection so we are just waiting for her to get it. :( It sucks big time.

Hi all!
6 month stats-19 llbs, 2 oz, 27 inches. Very big boy! We got our shots, the ok for more baby food and a bit of juice in a sippy cup. an yougurt in about 6 weeks. keep introducing a new food every couple of days. a good visit. Got his shots including a flu shot but we need to go back to get another one tomorrow since they were out of stock.

sippy cups- Harry just plays with it. smetimes sucks on it and get a mouth of water or juice, it then dribles down his chin... not sure if he knows what to do but it looks like a bottle to him so he wants it.... my SIL gave me handes to screw on to the cup. but she didn't send the cups so I need to got get some....

Bf'ing- still goin! I made it! I am so happy. I am going to see how much longer I can go. Harry still likes me best... not sure how long that will last. he has no trouble going back an forth. but we are going to introduce formula as the last feeding to get more in him and to get iron in him or he needs to take vitamins. we shall see.

Shaking-Harry still has a few shaking episodes. but they have lessened a lot. Seemed like he was having one every day... now maybe once or twice a week. lots better

Rolling- harry can roll! It is so funny! He woke up at night the other night. rolled over and put his head against the bumper of the crib. made him mad and he started to cry b/c he couldn't put his head down. We put him to sleep on his back but find him in the morning not under his blanket, and in a completely differnt spot in his crib....

Sitting up- Harry started to sit p a bit before Christmas but is getting better.

Park visit- Took him to the park and put him in an infant swing. he loved it!

Car Seat- bought a new car seat- one that goes from 5-100 pounds. rear and front facing. figure to get the best since he will be in it for a while!

Picture time!

I know there are threads on this somewhere but I just want to vent and get a hug. If anyone has suggestions, I'll happily take those as well. DS has not been napping well and is overtired. The last 2 days he's woken up early and has taken very few naps. However, he has been in a great mood while awake. DH used to put him to sleep but recently I've been nursing until he is almost asleep. Tonight I nursed and he was still totally awake. DH did some stories and has tried to get him down. DH is more comfortable with CIO than I am. I went up once and settled DS and thought he was going down but now he's screaming again. DH said he's starting to give up and go to sleep. I feel so torn because DH needs me to support him and his parenting. DS is becoming a momma's boy and I've been complaining about how much DH does or doesn't help. I feel like I can't step in even though I want to. This whole process starting after nursing has been going on for about 1 1/2hr. What would you do?

maggieb
01-09-2006, 07:41 PM
Oh, Nancy! I'm so sorry you're having to go through with this. I can't give you any advice about letting him cry or going to get him, but I will say that consistency is the most important thing. Either decide that you're going the CIO route and stick to it or decide that that was the worst experience and don't do it again. I'm speaking from experience. I waffled with Helena at this same age and sometimes I would let her cry and then I couldn't take it and I would cave and go get her. It really backfired on me. At 10 mos we had a sleep nightmare on our hands and it took us a while to get her back on track. I'm certainly not trying to sway you towards CIO or away from it. Just be consistent with whatever you choose.

It's so hard. I've been there. If you do decide to stick with CIO...my best advice is to call a good friend whose been there and talk to her while he's crying. Just keep reminding yourself that in the morning he will still love you. He will too.

I'll be thinking of you. Good luck!

Holy Cranky 6 Month Old!!

Syd had her 6 month appt today. She is doing great. She is 18.4 lbs, and 27.5 inches, 90th and 95th percentile respectively. She has her 2 bottom teeth, rolls over and around, sits like a champ, eats anything you put in front of her and is the complete joy of my life. That being said, the 6 month shots have not made a happy baby. My heart is breaking because I know she aches and is overall feeling yucky, and I can't seem to help. Add that to the fact that my 11 year old was in the er for a viral syndrome, getting and IV and fluids to rehydrate her, and this has been a terrible 24 hrs. I am soooo praying tommorrow is a better day. Thanks for letting me vent:)

Nancy - I am so sorry:( I kinda feel your pain today, DH is feeling a wee bit under the weather so he has been MIA through this enitre ordeal. He normally helps quite abit, but lately has been complaining that he doesn't get to sleep in enough. ???? HUH??? Buddy boy, I work nights, then come home and take care of DD, and only sleep after working 12 hours when she takes her naps. Sometimes he can sound so selfish, and I know he really isn't but still. Again, thanks for the vent. I hope things settle into a rhthymn (sp?) soon, and that you and DH can find a solution! Good luck!

Can't wait to see more pics and hear more stats!
Take care

char What a lot to take on! I hope things get better soon.

Nancy I'm sorry you've had such a tough time recently. Definitely hugs to you. It actually sounds a lot like what we went through when Bennett was around ten weeks old. Nothing DH did helped, so he was as close to giving up and being disengaged as I'd ever seen him. And I was getting so frustrated because I felt like I was doing all the parenting and DH's uninvolvement was just going to exacerbate Bennett's preference for me.

Agree with maggieb that the best thing to do is be consistent - CIO or not. What time is Connor's bedtime? I know that when Bennett naps like crap, he goes to bed about 30-45 minutes earlier than he would usually. And it's almost as if I can sense the relief he feels as I go through his bedtime routine.

As for getting DH to help, I started to hand Bennett to DH during the times when Bennett was happy and gurgling and ready to play. For us, it was in the morning, right after he'd been fed and changed. That gave DH some positive experiences which in turn encouraged him to deal with the less pleasant times. Of course, there are times when Bennett realizes I'm in the shower and that he's stuck with Daddy and then he starts to yell his head off, but for the most part, it's fun Daddy Time.

Chin up! The good (and sometimes bad) thing about babies is that all things pass and they move on to the next stage. :)

Cute babies!!

Lil Nance- I am so sorry. I feel your pain though. Parker absolutely hates being put down, whether its in her gym, on the floor, in her swing, on the bed, in her high chair. She screams...and on top of that she's not been sleeping well. Its so hard to deal with a baby alone from 7 am until 10 pm (DH works all the time) I basically let Parker sleep in the bed with me. I've found that it works for both of us, it allows both of us sleep at night. I dont know what your views on that are but if you're willing, you could try it out. I hope everything works out.

Parker is sick with pneumonia. Awful but shes getting better everyday. I hate seeing her sick.

THANKS everyone for all your support. Today was much better. Connor slept from 9:30ishpm until 7 this morning. I needed that. When I posted yesterday, I'd had about 9hr asleep in a 48hr period. I don't do well with that little sleep. So today he woke at 7, ate, slept in bed w/ me for an hr, ate some more. 11am took 1/2hr nap. He fell asleep for another 1/2hr when we ran errands. Then he went down for a late afternoon nap at 4 and slept for an 1 1/2hr. Tonight he went to sleep at 8 no problem.
We try to get him to bed between 7-8pm. He tends to start his day on the late side. I'm thinking of moving things a bit earlier so that he's getting up by 8am at the latest. Then morning and afternoon naps should be earlier and thus bed earlier. I'd like to have him actually asleep by 7:30 at the latest. I'm reading the sleep thread. Anyone here use Weissbluth? I'm going to borrow it from our library.

Loving all the pictures and stats. Our kids are growing so quick.

Nancy: I'm sorry to hear that you're having all of these sleep issues. The other night we had a doozy on our hands too. Luckily, it resolved itself by last night. (I made Luka sick by *spraying* saline up his nose while he had his head at an incline-- oops, bad mama! Stomach ache resulted, screaming all night long, DH slept, I held Luka all night, I went to work the next day with DH still in bed claiming he was up all night with Luka-- MEN!)

I thini whatever you guys choose to do, it should be consistent and reflective of your lives. We've been lucking and haven't had to do much sleep training but who knows what tomorrow holds.

HUGS all around!!!

Katie is sick too. She's got a horrible hacking cough. The doctor said it wasn't in her lungs. But, I'm worried that it will be. Her teachers are keeping an eye on her today at daycare to see if they can feel/hear anything in her chest. They freaking know more than my stupid pediatrician!! (I dislike my ped and am going to change soon). Her sleep and mood have suffered while she has been sick. Poor thing - its so hard seeing her sick.

Cassidy is sick as well. Her brother has RSV and I am just PRAYING everyday that she does not get it. Dealing with a sick baby is so HARD. Cassidy is scheduled to have surgery next Friday which requires general anesthesia so if she does get RSV, I think the surgery will have to be postponed.

lil_nance: I am a big Weissbluth follower. There is a whole thread on Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child in the parenting section. If you have any questions, just ask!

char473: When my DH starts complaining, I complain right back at him. I used to get literally HALF the sleep he did and he finally got the picture and stopped complaining about how tired he is.

Hope everyone gets better soon!

i'm so sorry that all these babies are sick! catie is doing well right now, knock on wood. she is also back to sleeping well, although she will only go to sleep w/ me which is upsetting DH (although if you ask me, i think he is giving up too easily b/c, um, it takes more than 10 mintues to get a baby to sleep sometimes.)

december: i am in the same situation. DH is gone all day (though he is home this week) and catie hates to be by herself. for me to cook i have to put her in her swing and put her swing next to me and i have to sing the ENTIRE time. i was hoping she would outgrow it once she learned how to sit up but apparently i am her favorite "toy." ;) parker is adorable btw...

baby food: i am planning on doing both too. i didn't realize this might be an issue though! i tried giving catie a spoonful of mashed bananas today but she put on a face like "gross!" and spit it out at me. i know she is not ready - i don't know why i let people try to convince me otherwise.

classes: i really wanted to do baby swim but at $125 for 8 sessions that i am not guaranteed to go to (they are saturday mornings) i just can't commit. i wish there was some sort of class that you could go to whenever and just pay $10/$15 per session but i can't find any. anyway, at my mom's group we always have "themes" so i am doing something but i was really looking forward to baby swim. maybe when she is a little older i can justify the cost.

sippy cups: someone asked about not introducing them -- i don't see why that would be a problem. i know plenty of babies who never liked sippy cups and, as a result, never used them. i think cup drinking (which catie loves to do already) is a more "essential" task to master. that said, i was successful w/ the sippy cup introduction. i started off w/ the playtex one w/ the handles but she would just bite at the spout. when i took the valve off (so that it wasn't spill proof anymore) the water would just spill into her mouth and she would look surprised and spit it out. then i bought the Nuby Insulated ones which someone here told me about. they are better b/c the spout is soft-silicone so when they bite it, the water comes out. after a few minutes of biting it, she started sucking successfully. also good is that it is shaped long and lean like a bottle so she is able to hold it herself.

i read that BF babies (maybe/probably FF babies too) should be offered water after 6-months so that they get flouride (sp?). i know NYC tap water has a lot of flouride in it already but i forgot to ask my doctor if boiling the water would get rid of the flouride. does anyone know the answer to this? it might be a stupid question now that i think about it.

sitting up: i noticed that a lot of the july babies were sitting on their own in pictures so i sat catie on the floor today in front of one of her toys and she just sat there and played. why it never occurred to me to do this before is beyond me. i wonder what other hidden talents she has...

QUESTION: (i must be the last one to do solids...) why does everyone keep saying "Earth's Best?" what is the difference b/tw EB and gerber or the other brands?

i hope all the babies get over their winter ailments soon...and jki, i hope cassidy's surgery goes well!

maggieb

Teba: I'm right there with you as one of the last ones to give solids. We still haven't. I'm in no big hurry as Marisa just isn't ready. I'm thinking that I'll try in about two weeks and if that's a bust, then I'll wait two more weeks and so on.

There's nothing like having a sick baby. I hope everyone with little one's under the weather get better very soon.

And I hope Cassidy's surgery goes well!

QUESTION: (i must be the last one to do solids...)

No honey! You aren't the last one! I'm waiting till a bit after the 6 month mark. :)

Totally have Catie try a few new things like sitting up. We just propped Alex up the other day (on the bed) and he just sat there with this huge smile on his face like he accomplished something. It just cracks us up. If they don't like it, they let us know, ya know?

Anyone else's baby talk ALLLLL the time? Alex is always babbling. Constantly. His newest thing now is Da da da da da blah blah blah. Of course, DH thinks he has said Dada and is thrilled. But then I mention to him that he said Ma ma ma ma a few weeks ago and he just rolls his eyes. Alex especially hates it when I'm on the phone. Anyone else? He grabs for the phone and then sighs in it when it is his grandmother (s) or DH on the other line. However, if I keep talking and talking, he gets REALLY fussy and is not a happy camper.

I'll be thinking about Cassidy!!!!

Hey everybody!

This is my second day back to work:o It's not as horrible as I expected. I started Lex in daycare last week starting at 2 hours and working him up to 4 hours a day. He didn't seem to mind he still laughed and talked especially once we got in the car. DH said it's because he knew we were going home. He has refused to drink his bottle from the daycare workers. But he eats his food just fine. I hope he'll trust them enough to drink from them.

Other then that I'm doing fine, trying to get used to pumping during the day, any tips/best practices on this, are much appreciated.

Lex-Is doing fine he is a jack of all trades and a master of none. He still gets up on all fours and rocks, now he moves his legs but when he moves his hands he falls down...so instead of mastering crawling he's got to pulling up. But not from a sitting position still lying down. he's completely moved on from mastering sitting and is not just pulling to stand:rolleyes:

Jill Lex talks all the time too. Last night I went into his room and he was talking in his sleep, I had to run out laughing it was the cutest thing. He also smacks his lips and yawns as if bored often.

baby food I decided to make my own baby food and I'm surprised at how well it has been working. SO far I've done sweet potatoes, bananas, peas and apples. I alternate vegi fruit. He loved bananas so much I might repeat those before I move on.

Sippy cups I’ve started the sippy cup at about 5 months and he has really taken to it. I would love the idea of going right from breast to cup and not have to wean him off the bottle at all...but we shall see.

Organic baby food the only thing Lex has refused to eat has been some organic cereal so I'm really hesitant to try anything organic now...

Cassidy will be in my prayers!

JKI - my thoughts are with you. So sorry your DD has to have surgery.

JP/NY - I haven't given solids yet either. I plan to do so on her 6 month b-day.

Talking - Yep. I hear a constant stream of nah nah nah nah nah. Lots of tongue clicking too. She was into growling for a while. Now she just makes this crazy noise that sounds like a haunted house door opening. Its so funny how she finds a noise she can do and does it over and over again.

solids We're starting with rice cereal this weekend. Connor will be 6mo on Sun. I think he's ready. He's showing a lot more interest in what we're eating. We let him sit in his highchair and play with a spoon during dinner time. He actually takes the spoon and will bite or suck on it.
talking Mr. Chatterbox takes after his mama. :D He babbled like crazy in the car yesterday.
sitting Just started this too. He can sit for a bit without toppling over. He still scrunches forward a bit. If he gets to excited he falls to one side. Then he flips on his belly and laughs.
Connor has developed so much in the past 2wk it's amazing. He's just much much more active. Rolling and scooting. He's all over his crib. I think that's part of the sleep issue (he's just too excited by all the new stuff he can do). It's amazing.

Sitting up (sort of) :)

Scary toys: I forgot to mention Lex got a peek a boo Elmo for christmas and loves it, it's like he's working on a computer or something his face is so focused well it sings and does tons of other stuff and periodically elmo scruches down and then jumps out and says peek a boo baby! Well he played with it for about 20 mins before this happened and then started screaming, christmas night he woke up with such a nightmare he was just screaming hysterically. It actually took another go round for me to realize that it was that specific thing that scared him. He loves the toy and still wants to play with it will crawl over to it and try to pull on the strings but I'm afraid it will give him nightmares again.:(

Do you notice that some toys scare your little baby?

earth's best: they actually sell it at my local supermarket (Waldbaum's). didn't realize it was organic.

Scary Toys - A friend of mine gave us this choo choo train that makes sounds and plays music and rolls around the floor. I've turned it on twice and my poor little guy grabs me so tightly and them starts to cry. I tossed it in the garbage as I felt terrible he got sooo scared from it.

jki - Hope things are well with Cassidy

Scary Toys - My MIL gave Katie a drum that plays music or shouts letters/numbers when you hit it. Each time she's seen/heard it - she cries hysterically.

In addition to the cough, Katie vomitted this morning. :( I'm bringing her back to the doctor in a little while.

I gotta start watching for these scary or very loud toys!
I haven't come across one yet that he has, so far. However, about a month ago when I was vacumming (I have vacummed many times since then, ha! ha!) I started it up and DS was so startled that he cried like crazy!! So now, before I start it up, I show it to him and start to make the vroom! vroom! sound and smile a lot. I think that 'warns' him.
Hope everyone is doing ok today and ready for the weekend!

Oh! wish me luck on Monday. When I went for my annual, the OBGYN (while doing an internal) mentioned that he felt a little fullness near my right ovary. I just about passed out in the room. Anyway, I'm going for an ultrasound--it says 'transvaginal as needed' in the early morning on Monday. I'm so scared. I have no idea what to think...of course I think the worst. I shouldn't though. He sent me for an ultrasound while prego regarding my cervix (which I also freaked out about) and it turned out to be nothing. I like that he is cautious but I was just not expecting this, ya know? any ideas? It may sound gross, but at the time he was really thinking that it was just a 'backup of stool'....eeew! However, I did go to the bathroom twice when I got home. Sorry if that is too much info!!!
He didn't sound worried at all, just as a precaution.

JKI & Myshel - I saw the thread on RSV.

Katie was diagnosed with bronchiolitis today and is on the nebulizer treatment...plus anitibiotics for a double ear infection. She has been vomitting from coughing too. It has me worried. I just read on WebMD to just keep breastfeeding, but in small sessions (if you FF, then switch to Pedialyte). I want her to keep her meds down and some milk. She's had normal wet diapers today (but then again, the vomitting just started today). She hasn't minded the nebulizer and was talking into the mask.

Its going to be a looong weekend.

Hope our babies get well soon. Its so scary going through this...esp. for the first time!!!

Jill Aw I am sorry. You are in my thoughts!!! Please keep us posted.

Tray I am so sorry. DD was diagnosed with pneumonia last weekend and is still taking antibiotics and on the neubulizer treatment. What did your ped say about her vomiting? Is it bad? I would keep an eye on that and keep checking her temp and if it gets really bad, take her to the clinic or ER. (I am so paranoid about things like that) Oh and give her plenty milk AND clear fluids. Katie will be in my thoughts. Please keep us updated as well.

Scary Toys None for us. DD loves all of her toys. (knock on wood)

NYNovia I am loving all of Catie's little outfits. She should be hired to model for Gymboree. ;) I am such a bad mama, I dont always dress Parker up but I should!

Today Parker is 7 months old :( My little baby is looking more and more like a toddler everyday. Yesterday I cried because she was learning how to sit on her own and is doing much better.

omg, i am so sorry that so many babies are sick. i am keeping all of you in my thoughts.

tray, you are doing great keeping her hydrated and keeping your supply up at the same time. BM is the best medicine for her right now. so glad she wasn't upset w/ the nebulizer.

kasia: if you find anything let me know and i will do the same. i joined a great playgroup if you are interested. we meet for the most part in forest hills though since that's where most of the moms are from (FWIW, i am not) so i'm not sure if you'd be interested since i assume you live in the city. if you are, just PM me. we have "themes" each week (or at least try to). we usually meet on thursdays. yesterday we did a sound and movement day. it was fun. we sang w/ the babies and moved our hands and their hands, etc. they loved it. i am going to do a baby sign language meeting if you want to come to that. that one will be in astoria.

jill: catie just started doing the same thing w/ the vacuum cleaner too! so weird b/c i use it everyday and she never cared before but i think i got a little to close or something and now it scares the crap out of her. i'm going to try the vroom vroom move too. LOL. good luck btw -- sounds like a cyst to me. i have had a lot of those (they resolve on their own for the most part).

december: thank you! i think it's funny b/c over the last few days people have mentioned how she is always "dressed up" and i am starting to think that people think that i'm strange. it's just that we go out a lot. i promise that when we are home she is usually in a track suit of some sort. that said, dressing catie is my favorite activity of the day. i seriously can't wait until her hair grows like parker's so that i can put barrettes in it again. HAHA. where do you buy parker's hair clips? i notice she always has really cute ones on.

how do your kids react around other kids? catie was clearly annoyed by this little girl at playgroup. the little girl kept rolling over by her (she is 4 weeks older) and catie would push her away or cry if the little girl touched her. just when i thought things couldn't get worse (the other moms were asking me if i ever "expose her" to other children) she started licking the little girl's head! so weird.

she loves to stick things in her mouth: blankets, her hands, my hands, the remote control, etc. it's kind of gross but i like that she gets to taste/feel different textures. though i think little girl head is a texture she can live w/out knowing!

Tray: Everything you've said sounds good. I just poor Katie gets to feeling better soon. We had issues with keeping Luka hydrated because he only drank about 16 ounces on the days he was really sick. We started feeding him 2 ounces at a time and he seemed to do better with that.

Luka is feeling better. He's actually back to his normal self-- smiling, agreeable, on his normal schedule. I was surprised at how easily he went back to his normal routine. We still give him treatments as he can get wheezy from time to time.

Clothes Question: How often do you find yourselves buying clothes for DC? We haven't had to buy clothes for a long time but now that Luka is growing like mad, I fear we're going to have to go balls out with the clothes. Do you just buy as needed or do you do major shopping trips to outfit the little one?

Jill: I agree with Marie. It really could just be a harmless cyst. I get those all of the time (part of my PCOS) and they dissolve on their own. At any rate, I'm sending you healthy vibes!

Solids Well we started solids tonight. It went fairly well. Not sure how much he actually ate. I think he was more interested in using the spoon as a chew toy. :D

Clothes I didn't buy much before Connor was born since we didn't find out gender ahead of time. Now, it's harder to control myself. I have a friend who has a 2 1/2yr old son. She gave me a HUGE box of his 9-18mo clothes so I'm not buying much right now. Of course I did just get a Valentine's outfit at Target tonight.

Here's Connor enjoying his dinner.

Thanks Myshel, I'm glad Luka is better. Katie was much less fussy today, didn't vomit and coughed less. Her chest *sounds* worse though. We'll just keep up with the treatments. I actually talked to a pediatrician at a baby shower today and she basically said that you have to wait RSV out. Can't wait to have my healthy girl back!

I had a great afternoon out. I reconnected with a group of girls I hadn't seen in years. It was so much fun!! DH is really sick and had a grueling day taking care of Katie (she's happier, but still high-maintenance). Poor guy!

Clothes - I had a boatload from the neighbor, but I still get things here and there. I find I'm kinda lazy. I like comfy separates for her (she's in daycare) and overalls. I wouldn't go on a huge shopping spree because you never know how long they will be in a certain size.

Kids - When I first started Katie at daycare, she was afraid of other kids and would cry if they got near her. After 3 months, she loves them...or at least is interested in them. I guess last week, one of the older babies was dancing and Katie was giggling. The faster he danced, the more she thought it was funny. She's also fascinated with older kids. At the doctor's office, a 4 year old girl kept walking by and Katie would whip around and follow her everywhere she went.

clothes I buy way too many clothes for this kid, considering how quickly he moves up through the sizes. I just packed away a whole big plastic bin of 0-6 month clothes for DH to take to our storage unit. I was one of the first in my group of college friends to have a boy (most had girls, then after Bennett, there were like 3 more boys born), so no hand-me-downs.

kids Bennett loves the kids in his playgroup. Sometimes, he'll just sit back and watch them, but other times, he'll get into the fray and roll around and play with them. Bennett's new thing this past week was scootching across the floor. This past Friday, I hosted the playgroup at our house and he would scootch from one baby to the next, like he was playing host! :p

Sorry everyone's babies have been sick! I hope they're all on the mend!

Clothes: I buy a couple here and there. We didn't receive many outfits in the 9 month range, and Nates too small to transition into a 12 month yet, although Pete could - so we comprimise with 9 month clothes. LOL We pick them up as needed, because Im not sure what size they will be in for a specific season. I mainly shop at the Carter outlet, Target, Fred Meyer (Carter and Oshcosh brands mainly) and Walmart. I don't really need clothes to be expensive as we don't really have anyone to pass them down to and they grow out of these sizes so quickly. When the boys were first born, I went on a major shopping spree for clothes because I had been on bedrest for most of my pregnancy and hadn't purchased anything for them. We do run out of stocked-up-on-sizes at the 12 month size, so whenever they outgrow that, we will need to start buying again. Im just hesitant to purchase anything larger than 12 months, because again, I don't know what season it will be. I keep meeting 1+ year olds who are still in a 12 month, and my Pete is almost in a 12 month size now! Not sure if he will hang out in that size or quickly breeze through it like he has with all the other sizes.

I am just amazed lately, at how big they are. It boggles my mind. Petes ribcage is BIG, he has a big head, big hands and feet, big torso. When Im tossing him around, and then I grab Nate, I have to be careful that I don't launch Nate because he is so much smaller. (He is 'normal size'...whereas Pete is the same size as my friends baby who is almost 4 months older than he is.)

Hi all.
I saw the doc on Friday. It will be surgery afterall. The cyst on my left ovary is a bit bigger than my thumb. He isn;t sure if he will need to take the ovary as well. He maybe able to do it all with the scopes but maybe not. Then I will have to have a c-section style. Both mean an overnight stay in the hosptial. either 2 nights or 4. My MIL is thinking of coming up to help the first week. since I will be on a weight lifting restriction and Harry weighs 20 pounds. We have been given 6 weeks or so to wean Harry from bf'ing. I feel like a bad mom. I was reading a book at B&N about weaning and it made me feel horrible for thinking to quit bf'ing before my child is 2 yo! turned out to be written by the LaLeche Leauge! augh.
So, we still need to get Harry to take a bottle from me. plus, lose my supply without engorgement. It is going to be tough.
Plus, this means more bed rest- God Bless America. When can I catch a break! :(

dizylizy I am so sorry! I am having some bfing problems, but at least to wean or not is still a choice. I know what you mean about feeling like a bad mom - I feel guilty even considering weaning at 6 months, then when I go to my playgroup (where only 2 out of 8 mothers are still bfing fulltime), I think, well, it's not so bad. I totally fluctuate. But I definitely feel for you. :(

So the surgery is in six weeks? We'll be thinking of you.

Dizylizy - I am so, so sorry you have to have surgery and wean. My heart breaks for you. I think my instinct would be to pump and freeze as much as possible, but then that would mean you would be trying to "dry out" after surgery. I'm sure that would be no fun. Hugs.

Dizylizy-Big hugs and piece of mind to you in whatever you choose regarding weaning! and sorry about the surgery. :(

Clothes-Thankfully, we haven't had to buy much of anything. My good friend keeps giving us boxes of clothes from her son so it has worked out well!
I do like to splurge every so often though.

Thank you for all your nice thoughts regarding my ultrasound! It went well yesterday and the technician said that just on her opinion and views, she saw nothing there at all near any of the ovaries and nothing out of the ordinary. She also mentioned that internally it didn't look like I had a baby. The uterus is back to normal and everything looks great. I was thrilled.
Thanks though for thinking about me. I was really worried and didn't sleep well this past week or so. So glad it's over.

Portraits - We are planning Katie's 6 month portraits. We used Celebrity Kids for her 3 month. They were awesome and we loved the pictures - but its so pricey that its kind of a "once a year" thing. We are thinking of using Kiddie Kandids that are located within Babies R Us stores. They are really cheap and I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience with them? Thanks!

Also - for those with babies that had RSV/bronchiolitis/pneumonia, etc., how long did it take for them to recover? It has been a week and Katie's lungs seem about the same to me. We are taking her back to the doctor today.

Also also - those with ear infections, did your doc give you liquid antibiotics? Katie gags and throws up fairly often when I try to give this to her b/c she hates it so much. NOT cool. Just wanted to know what others have been prescribed. Thx.

Tip for giving liquid medicine: squirt it into the nipple of a bottle and attach the bottle.

We had been trying the syringe, dropper, spoon, finger...and Katie fought us like a wild woman. I put her antibiotics in a bottle and she sucked them right down. Go figure.

This, of course, assumes your little one takes a bottle.

NYNovia No, I dont think its weird that you're dressing Catie up. I wish I had the energy to dress Parker up everyday! But, we dont go anywhere other than to the grocery store so whats the point? About the bows, I got them from a store near my house. I can check to see if they sell them anymore, if they do I can send you some for free. What colors do you need? I'll see what they have!

DizyLizy I am so sorry. If you're concerned about DS not getting breastmilk. Pump as much as you can and freeze? Or you can recieve donated breast milk (I believe theres an organization for that.)

Cute babies! I have to say I am jealous of these babies who are really mobile. Parker just started sitting up on her own last week. (knock on wood) But she still screams her head off after awhile. Its so hard!

Clothes Ahem. Call me crazy...but I've been buying girl clothes since I was 17! I knew I wanted a baby girl ONE DAY and alas I got her! Everyone was telling me how crazy I was (I probably was) but now that I have her, she has sooo much clothes! lol Although, I had to go out today to buy more winter clothes for our trip to Philly next month. I am flying alone with DD. Wish me a luck!

[/B]QOTD[/B] Crying around strangers. Not really. But she did with the ILs! LOL!!!! I dont really get along with MIL but I had to turn around and laugh when she did. But again, I felt bad for MIL because she looked like she was gonna cry too.

Tracie, I think I've seen a paci-type object where you can put the meds in and let the baby suck them down. I'll see if I can find it.

ETA: Here it is from One Step Ahead (http://www.onestepahead.com/product/27223/291757/117.html)
http://www.onestepahead.com/images//product/family/10954-v.jpg

Bennett had his 6-month check up last week, weighing in at 15.5 lbs and 27+ inches (I forget exactly what). Since then, we weighed him on a baby scale we have at home and he was all the way up to 16+ lbs (after a few big poops!), so we think he's in a growth spurt right now.

Why? Because he started waking up in the middle of the night to eat, in addition to Hoovering down his solids (I keep the total volume per feeding to 4 tbs) and nursing every 1.5-2 hrs during the day.

Plus Bennett either is teething or has a stomach bug. He's cranky during the day (especially the afternoon) and at night, naps like crap, sleeps like crap, and has had several BMs daily. He's also drooling a ton, which makes me lean towards teething. But the ped thinks it's a stomach bug.

I am so tired. I knew that his fantastic napping and STTN would have to end sometime, but we only had about 1 1/2 glorious months. Sigh.

The height must be from my 6'3" father because DH & I are more on the vertically challenged side. ;) DS is napping right now, hope he feels better. I gave him some Tylenol when we got home and an hr. later he threw up. Poor baby. Dr. said he seems to be healthy and on track developmentally (rolling, sitting, sleeping, solids, talking, etc.).

Hi all,
December- wow, what a great picture!

Ok, so I don't have to wean. Talked to a nurse in my Ob office. She said I could nurse as soon as I was awake. I was so struggling with that. surgery is set for Feb 28th. We are both nervous. MIL is coming out for the first week of rest. forgot I won't be able to drive until the doc clears me. augh. we shall see how my contract position works now...
Harry is sitting up fully now. pulls himself up on the toy bar of his rocking chair. loves his activity cneter.
V-day cards- going to make some to send to Grandma's.
6 month pictures- going to dress Harry up and take him to an indoor park tomorrow to take some myself. see how I do. I think we will get one year pic's done professionally.
Ok, off to calm my hungry baby! =)

December - Great B/W Pictures. Are you using a Digital SLR?

dizylizy - Glad to hear you do not have to wean!

Clothes - We go through them quickly! He's still using his 3-6 month clothing but I'm sure will be in his 6-9 months within a few weeks.

Crying around strangers - Not at all. He gives strangers his biggest grin. He's also fine being held by friends and family. We'll see how long that lasts as I just might be lucky now.

My little man is 6 months old today! We have an appt to see the Pediatrician tomorrow. He's been doing well for the most part. He's been having gas problems once again and not sure why. Will probably ask the doctor as he's onto fruits and veggies and maybe something I'm giving him is causing it.

Went to Central Park today as I wanted to see how he would like the Bucket Swings and he LOVED it! When it was time to go he started crying and holding onto the swing! Too Funny.

Hope all is well with you girls! Here's a shot of him in his high chair after some lunch!

What a cutie pie! And that was *after* eating? My boys are always messy when they are done (okay, so feeding them both at once may add to the mess).

I love your highchair, which one is it?

Here are my boys eating their first meal in their highchairs. Normally, I do try to control the mess, but for the first time feeding both of them in their chairs, I just let the mess go. (and yes, they headed straight for the tub after dinner.)

Pete, my good eater who wants it faster than I can shovel it in:

Nate, my picky eater who will just suddenly refuse to open his mouth and then spit everything out (as you can tell by the bib).

That's picture was taken after the bib was off and everything was wiped down. He's not too messy thank goodness but I'm sure he's going to turn a corner any day now...

Everyone's babies are too CUTE!!! Quick highjack to ask Kasia216 a question ... i LOVE your little boy's shirt/onesie in the highchair picture! I wanted to ask, if you don't mind, where you bought it. We constantly refer to DS as "the king" and even have my in-laws calling him the same ... hehe:D btw, we have the svan highchair as well and love it! back to lurk mode ...

Thanks, everyone, for your well wishes regrading Cassidy's surgery. It went well and hopefully thing will be back to normal soon. She has to wear a horrible brace on her arm so that she does not touch the suture.

Here's Cassidy in her Bumbo:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6df03b3127cce975dad91045800000015109AYtGrJu3ac

We're a little late on our 6 month check up - it is this Friday. I can't wait to see how much she weighs - I weighed her with clothes and a wet diaper and she was 17 lbs., 2 oz.

December: Those pictures are amazing! She is so beautiful!

newyorkgirl: We used to call Jackson "the boss" and we joked that we worked for him and that our boss was so demanding. That onesie is so cute, as is Bennet! :)

Has anyone switched over to a convertible car seat yet? I switched last week and she LOVES her Marathon - it's just so much more spacious and I think she likes it because she can see out the window and she can see her brother.

Crying around strangers - yeah, I think Cassidy is already developing separation/stranger anxiety. She cried all through Christmas dinner while sitting in MILs lap. If she can see me, she freaks out until I am holding her.

Look at all the little ones chillin in their bumbo seats.

MaMa2D - The King Onesie. I got it as a gift but it's from Old Navy. Not sure you can see the letters but right above it it says Mommy's Little and then you see King in big letters.

Jackson went for his 6 month check-up today and he weighs 16 lbs and is 27"! He's 25th percentile for weight & 70th percentile for height.

I agree that among the boys there seems to be a difference, Lex was also 27.5 inches and was at about 75%-85%. They always give us a range like that. What's funny is how they all started out widely different but are all averaging out with each weight in.

I'm happy that Cassidy's surgery went well!

All of the babies are too cute, and I love those onsies

also, about the percentiles, i was wondering the same thing as erika. catie weighed 19lbs and was 27.5 inches and the doctor read me 90% for both. i know she uses the cdc charts - i wonder if there are different ones?? either way, it has to be different for boys and girls but that seems like a large descrepency.

So glad to hear everything went well with Cassidy:)

Carseat We have the Marathon and have been using it for about a month now. She loves it, it gives her more wiggle room, and I love everything about it, but the price of course;) It took some adjustment as to not having the snugride to just pop out and take along with me, but I have one of those floppy seats for the carts and it works great.

My poor baby girl has a gastro bug, and has for the first time in her life a diaper rash. It breaks my heart! So we are all on diaper patrol around here. I hope this is a quick bug, her little bottom is not having a good time.

Nanner - I got it at my baby shower, its a shopping seat cover. I know there are several different types out there. Most come with a little pillow for those new to sitting up, and place to put the bottle, and loops for toys to link to. They are pretty padded, and make you feel safe putting baby in the yucky cart:D

Hope that helps!

Bennett's been in the convertible carseat for about a week or so now, and he loves it. It's all I can do to not let him fall asleep in it. At first, I thought he might be carsick because he puked all over it the first time we put him in, but he seems to be fine now. He loves looking out the window - I'm sure he'll get even more excited when we can turn him around to face forward.

I've ordered a custom shopping cart cover from sewcuteboutique and am waiting patiently for it to come! Bennett still isn't steadily sitting up yet, but he's pretty close...

Hey, ladies! All of the July (and August!) babies look fabulous. I'm a bad mommy because I haven't scheduled any pictures yet. I wanted to wait until February to get pictures taken again. We went to Picture People last time and while I loved the pictures we got, we spent oodles of money. I don't want to do a repeat of that if we can help it.

Luka has been in his convertible carseat for about two weeks now. We have the Britax Marathon and we like it pretty well. We also bought a Graco Comfortsport or my dad's car since he's our live-in nanny this year. We really haven't had a hige issue with carts or highchairs when we go out to eat. We usually prop Luka up with my purse. I feel like I'm being a bad mommy (again) for doing it this way, but we already haul tons of crap with us everywhere so...

Our 6 month appointment isn't until the 1st. I'm curious to see what Luka's height and weight come out to as he was tiny at his 4 month apointment (12 lbs. 5 ounces, 26.5 inches). He just seems to be getting longer, but not filling out any more than usual.

Tonight, DH and I are going to a school function for staff and we're leaving Luka with a real babysitter (not my dad, my sister, or an other relative). The girl is a totally trustworthy HS senior (whom I've had in class) but I'm still nervous!

Sometimes putting DS to bed in the evening and having a well deserved glass of wine is the best part of the day. ;) Did this last night and it was heaven.

Solids are going fairly well. He seems to finally be getting the concept. So far we've done rice, barley, bananas, and sweet potatoes. Connor has been fussy during the day lately. Not sure why but it gets old really quick. One of his issues is he likes to sit up. He topples over and isn't yet able to get himself in a sitting position. Any suggestions on how to help him learn to sit up on his own.

Time to go...fussy boy is paging me.

Do you have a Boppy? Put that around him when he is sitting on the floor and it will hold him in that position better than nothing at all. At least if he topples over or crawls out of it (like DS), it's a little bit of a barrier and maybe he will be more secure and content in there.

I've now noticed that Alex will sit for a while, then suddenly go to the side and wipe himself around so he is on his belly and attempting to crawl over the Boppy. He doesn't like staying in one place for a long period of time anymore. Sorta sad to see them want to become so independant, ya know? When I hold him, he will even push himself away to go get something or get down on the floor. Sniff.

Hi, all
Car seat- we switched over to one that goes up to 100 pounds. Harry wasn't sure about it at furst but now he has no problems. The ped reccomended we get a new one as he was to big for the carrier- he feet were sticking out over the edge! BUt this also means, we have to be dilligent about getting a hat and coat on him. For the carrier we had a snug blanket with a little hole and flap to keep him cozy!

Sitting up- Harry is so good at this. started a little before christmas and now he can sit up for about 20 minutes on his own. topples over every now and then. but for the most part he is doing great!

Exersuacer- harry could live in his! loves it! just sqeals in the mornign to be put in it.

Solids- HArry is doing great! we have alos bought some of those bitter biscuits by Gerber to chew on. Love those. have to stay close in case he gnaws off part and gets it in his mouth. don't want him to choke!

Cart and high chairs when out and about- I bring a wet wipe and sanitizer and clean it off. Plus, bring chew toys to keep him busy. loves carts.. he can see so much. high chairs are hard-each pace is different.
Funny story- we were at Denny's and it was the first time I had put Harry in a high chair at a resturant... I was giving him a little apple juice in a plastic glass. He likes to chew on it. anyway, I turned my head for a second, he had a hold of teh glass and started to tip it to his mouth, as he tipped the glass so did he, and tipped the glass full into his face. he fell back against the back rest-b/c silly mama didn't push him all the way back. no crying just sticky from all the juice in his hair, face and down his shirt. granted it was only about 2 ounces but it freaked me out... my dad was just laughing which got Harry giggling. so all is well. watch those high chairs ladies, you need degrees on how to put the kiddes in them. the servers aren't much help.... :p

Pictures- need to find a place I like to get his one year pictures taken profesionally. I want some cute ones!

surgery update- this is so blasted complicated I can't even tell you! Now the OB I have been seeing since we found out about we were pg, is resigning from the practice I use. drat, that means I ahve to meet a new doc who will agree to this procedure. so far this doesn't change the date but it may... TG, my MIL hasn't bought her plane ticket yet. I will let her know next week. this sucks though, this doc knew everything about my high rick pg and I was hoping to go to him for #2.... oh well... such is life!

HAve a great week!

hey everyone, glad to hear that everyone seems to be doing well. catie is doing great. still a very happy girl, growing well, etc. sleep is going a little better for us but she now wakes up at 4:30am for her first feeding. i'm not complaining about it though b/c she goes back down until 7:30 or 8am and some days, when i'm lucky, she plays for a while and i can sleep until 9am (like today, hee hee).

solids: solids are NOT going well for us. well, most days they're not going at all. we tried sweet potatoes one day and oatmeal another. both times she acted as if i was poisoning her and it brought on her gag reflex. it would have been funny to watch if i didn't feel so bad for her. this morning i tried giving her applesauce and again, she gagged. DH thinks she is having a texture aversion but i really think she just doesn't like the taste b/c i have handed her things off my plate and she eagerly puts them in her mouth but quickly gets repulsed by them. anyway, i'm not too worried. i wanted to delay solids as much as possible anyway so this makes my decision easier. (in the back of my head i do worry that she won't ever eat though i know this isn't true).

car seat: catie has been in her big girl car seat since early december. she really likes it. it is squishy in our car though. she is the one who is most comfortable!

floppy seats: someone got me the bella baby one and i returned it to BRU for $60 store credit (sweet!) and i am planning on getting a custom one as well (from marisa from here on cc).

dizzy: sorry to hear about the complications with the surgery.

december: love, love, love the pics! about the hair clips, one of my friends actually ended up giving me a bunch so i am covered. thanks for the offer though.

Cassidy had her 6 month appointment on Friday. She finally surpassed the 50th percentile in weight and her ped was delighted!

Weight - 16 lbs., 8 oz. - 62nd percentile
Height - 27.5 inches - 95th percentile
Head circumference - forgot - 75th percentile

solids: are going great for us. Cassidy LOVES them. She gets 3 meals and 1 snack per day. She's only had peas, sweet potatoes, rice cereal, bananas, pears, apples, and avocado. I put a lot of stuff in her mesh feeder and she loves it.

sleep: (knock on wood) is also going well. Cassidy sleeps 12-13 hours straight at night and she sleeps about 4 hours total during the day. She's starting to drop her 3rd nap. She woke up at 8am this morning... if only I could get her brother to sleep that late, I'd be in heaven!!

milestones: no sitting, no crawling, very little rolling over.

seat cover: How funny. I've never even used one of those before... I guess because I never take my kids grocery shopping - I'm so much faster by myself.

NewYorkNovia and newyorkgirl: GREAT pictures! :) Your little ones are adorable!

NewYorkNovia - Once again, our Katie/Catie's are so similar. Katie things that food is poison. Yesterday, we let her play with the spoon and kept putting food on it and she got *some* cereal down. But if we spoon feed her, spit. Spit, spit, spit.

6 mo check up - Katie dropped to 75th % for height and weight (from 90 all along). She's 27.5 inches and 17.1 lbs. Forgot what her head was. I think she lost some weight when she was sick the last few weeks.

Now I'm freaked about my milk supply.

Gotta run.

Nancy: Funny pics. I love the one with the mirror.

Luka had his 6 month appointment today. All went well. He hardly cried at all when he got the shots this go round. Here are his stats:

Height: 27.25 inches 75th percentile
Weight: 14.9 pounds 5th percentile
Head: 42.5 inches 25th percentile

Notice the weight! I completely freaked out and was very concerned. The ped, however, wasn't the least bit concerned. Since Luka drink between 32 and 40 ounces per day and takes one meal of solids per day, the ped feels as though Luka just burns a ton of calories during the day. I guess I'm not sure what to think. Our ped came highly rec'd to us and is the leading ped in the city, so I'm sure he knows what he's doing. The ped just keeps telling us that it's better to have a slim fellow than a chunk. What do you girls think?

The ped just keeps telling us that it's better to have a slim fellow than a chunk. What do you girls think?

As the mother of a chunky boy and skinny-average girl, I think chunky beats skinny ANY day. When your child is chunky, if they get sick and don't eat, you don't freak. If they go on a food strike, you don't worry. If they don't eat in general, it's just not a big deal. When they start throwing food and after they've figured out gravity, with a chunky child, you have no qualms about ending the meal and having them never throw another peice of food during a meal. With DD, I probably would not do that because I don't think she can afford to skip a meal!! JMO.

I would be freaked out too...heck my moms freaked out about him being in the 50% range:cool: So I don't know I might want a second opinion...but what can you do? theres not alot of ways to increase calories at this point I mean a whole 4th cup of cearal is a whopping 60 calories, and if you put too much in it's just going to come right back out.

What do you girls think? Is Luka meeting milestones and does he seem to be a happy baby overall? If so, then I wouldn't worry about his percentile for weight. Our friend's little girl just made the charts at 5th perc for weight and she's a bright, precocious, healthy 2 yr old...just petite.

NYN

i would not worry. i would worry if he was completely off the charts -- then i think it would be a problem. but as long as he is drinking up his recommended oz of formula, what can you do? (if you see that he is drinking less formula, then i would cut back on solids a little. formula should still be his main source of nutrition.) 5% does not mean the same thing as being the kid in the class who got the D as a grade - we tend to read percentiles that way. 5% means that out of 100 kids, him and 4 others are 14lbs...those are still pretty good odds.

i have a friend whose little girl is 2-years-old. she weighs 2 more lbs than catie. they are in the same size diapers. she is a happy, healthy little girl, just small.

i know it's hard, especially when you're hearing it from someone whose DD has always been in the 90th for weight/height, but i swear that if i were in your situation i would not be worried. he seems like a very happy little guy!!

myshel: How big are you and your DH? Are you both on the small side? Size is usually hereditary..... but if you are both tall or big, maybe it is something that you should look into further. How big was Luka when he was born? Has he remained consistent as far as percentiles from birth? If he has remained consistent, I think he is fine but if he has dropped dramatically from some point, I would be worried.

Thanks for the questions and support. Luka is meeting all of the milestones he should be: rolls, sits up for extended times, babbles like crazy, grabs for things, sleeps through the night, stands with assistance.

Luka was 7 pounds, 15 ounces at birth, so at six months he hasn't quite doubled his birth weight. His percentiles have declined with each visit (50th at 2 months, 25th at four months, and 5th at six months) but the doctor is always sure that ou visits hit righ after a growth spurt length wise because he measure so well in that area.

I was a smallish baby (22 inches, 6 pounds, 9 ounces) but a lot of that I chalk up to my mother's smoiking throughout pregnancy. According to my parents, I filled out nicely as I grew. There are rolls in my pictures.

DH was and still is huge. At birth, he was 24 inches and 10.7 pounds. All through the first year of his life, DH was a chunk (he likes to joke that he was skinny once in his life-- first grade).

I consider myself to be average size-- 5'6' and an average weight. DH is on the bigger side-- 6'3" and 265 pounds. I guess that's why I'm troubled. We're both very average and Luka obviously isn't in the weight department. The only thing I can possibly attribute Luka's size to is my FIL, who was a tiny baby and a very thin child (who grew up impoverished in a small Honduran village). ARGH!

Hey girls! I am so sorry I dont post in here much. I try to post in LJ and you all are welcome to friend me if you have LJ. I am Decembe27JJB over there as well. ;)

Beautiful babies. I cant believe how big they're getting. Parker is growing and growing!

Weight issues: I am 'guessing' she is about 19-20 lbs now. She has CHUBBY-CHUBBY thights. Just today, we went to the store, I put her in her Bjorn. She was wearing a onesie so you could see the rolls on her legs. This woman came up to her and grabbed her feet and said "Wow. Did mama overfeed you?" Then she proceeded to ask me, "How much did she weight when she was born?" I should've said '12 pounds' (she was 6 lbs) But she was so rude, she didnt even say 'adorable, or cute' she had the look of disgust on her face. Mind that, DD is mostly BF...she's just getting started on solids regularly but prefers to be BF. How the heck can a BF baby be 'overfed' lol  Some people amaze me.

It is so hot down here in FL! It is winter clothes one day, summer clothes the next, winter again, summer again...Parker has bit of a stuffy nose. We are going to Philly next Tuesday so it's definitely winter clothes all the way ;)

Teeth: No teeth yet! Are there still any bald-mouthed babies in here?

NYNovia: You 'inspired' me to dress Parker up everyday. I went out and bought rubbermaid boxes to put away her little clothes and most of her onesies so DH and I dont just grab a onesie...we have to dress her up!! Thanks!

Ok, ladies, good info for you.
On Monday, I picke dup Harry from the day care we use-in-home. I took Harry from Patti and noticed he looked like he was crying or tired. we chatted a bit. he stayed on my hip. I was a bit upset so I wasn't paying close attention to him (Patti was telling me we owed her for last week-even thought we had a family emergency out of town. I called to tell her we wooulnd't need her on monday but wasn't sure about Thursday, then forgot to call her for not needing her on Thursday. so she was giving me a bill for the week plus 100 late fee (four days late on payment). I spoke very loudly that I wasn't going to pay that. I felt that was unreasonable. she ended up knocking it down to only $50. but I will get into my feelings about the racketering day care centere get away with later) anyway, I left with Harry. He was a bit upset. as I was putting him in his car seat he started screaming and crying, big tears. I pulle dhim out of his seat and rocked him for a bit and then put him back in. HE screamed a bit and I figured he was just mad at me. I drove the 3 blocks home. I unloaded the car quickly. I noticed Harry was not sucking his thumb or playing with his car toys. Ok, just tired and ready to eat. I took him inside and began to nurse. as I laid him on my lap I noticed his arm was laying funny. I picked it up and he started crying. ok, weird. I continued to nurse. still not moving his right arm. I then picked up his arm again. he let out this scream. Something was wrong with his arm! I called my hubby. asked him if he had noticed anything funny this morning. nope. called Patti. I asked her if anything weirf happened that day. nope, had tummy time, played with the kids, ate and poopped, and played in the saucer. only had a fleece jacket and a onsie on so she didn't take off the fleece all day for fear he was cold. OK. I will take it off. maybe I am bein over sensitive or he is mad at me to bug him while he is nursing... taking the fleece jacket off was hurting him. once that was off, I could see his arm was not swollen or anythimg. but he was still not using it. weird. I flipped sides. and that was painful for harry. we didn't quite finish the feeding, he was leaning on his right arm. I put him on teh floor to change his diaper and he started screaming in pain. SOMETHING is not right. I called the nurse line. the ped told me to go to urgent care. by now I am freaking out. HArry is not using his right arm and screams if you touch or move it!
At urgent care- the nurse knows exactly what is wrong! Nurse maid's elbow-a dislocated elbow. happens if the arm is feld at the wrist and tugged, ligaments are not strong enough to hold the joint in place. You have got to be kidding!! we sit there for 45 min. Pete comes in afer 20. He was not sure what I was tryingt o describe in my "trying not to panic" state. but instantly he knows. Harry is on my lap, playing and reaching with his left arm only. and not sucking his right thumb-which he does a lot. we are called back. see the nurse and wait another 15 minutes. by now, i am a bit preturbed to be in a hot room, with a hurt baby and everyone seems to know what is wrong but is not doing anything to fix it... the doc comes in, touches his arm (small cry) sends us off for X-rays. OMG!! what an ordeal. Only one parent in the room. Pete goes in b/c our chucky monkey has wore my arms out already. He lays Harry no his back and he starts screaming and screaming! I am in the room off of that and can hear him. I start crying!! :( we go back to the little room. Doc comes in a bit later, nope not broken, lets see if we can pop it back in place. OMG!! more screaming and crying from Harry. The doc tries twice. no luck. he sends us off to Children's Hospital ER. I panic as I bring the car up to the door that Pete only has Z-rays- no paperwork from the urgent care and since it is after hours, I am knocking on the door and the nurse at the desk is ignoring me!!
Finaly she comes out and syas they don't give paper work and none is needed.
I am in tears, Harry is crying and Pete is trying to calm us both down. I am driving us to Children's b/c I know that way. THen Pete calls his parents to let them know what is going on and to distract me. olny makes me cry more.
Finally, at Children's ER. teh waiting room is packed! such a sad place. they fast track us to an inside desk. we register and wait. I am asked not to nurse him. it is now 9:30pm. we spent 2 hours at urgent care. and now I can't feed the baby. so Pete has to hold him b/c when I do, he turns his head to my chest. so disconcerting. we wait and wait. we aretold we would be next- then two patients come and go... finally we are called. the nurse, again, knows what is wrong and how we need ot fix it. but he has to wait... by now it is 10:30pm. I am getting really stressed, tired, frustrated and want to feed my obviously hurting baby. nope, wait for doc. OK. I am getting a bit loud and snap at my husband to get that nurse back here and fix teh issue. I haven't feed HArry for 5 hours. finally, at 11 pm, we see the doc. she looks at Harry, chats. she is very nice. explains what she is going to do. then tries to readjust Harry. he has now fallen asleep in Pete's arm. EH awakes screaming. He starts to wiggle a bit and then screams louder and his other arm is outstreached to me, shaking! I lose and start bawling! she stops. then tries again. Is doesn't work. more screaming and big tears. she decides we should feed him and calm him down. I sit down to nurse him and he is fine, starts to fall back to sleep. She talks to Peteabout how she is going to try again. Then she gently takes his arm and starts to pull and twist. Harry starts to cry again.... Then it pops bak in. Pete heard teh pop. Harry whimpers a bit and then goes backto nursing. we cna't leave until she is sure he can use his right arm. five minutes after finishinf eating, he pops his right thumb in his mouth! :) all is better.
so 5 hours later all is well.

Nurse Maid's Elbow is common. CAn be done when the forearm is tugged and the elbow is hyper extended. babies and toddlers do not have the muscle strength to hold the joint in place. so it slips out. extremely painful to be put back. should be done quickly. doc said it is often caused by pulling a toddler by the arm as you walk, swinging a toddler by the arms, pulling an arm through a sleeve or tug-of-war with toys between kids. so don't pull on their amrs until after 5 years old. and once it pops out once, it can pop out again. must pick up baby by chest. and be very careful abotu putting on clothes. holy moly. what an ordeal. got the name b/c in olden days when families had nurses for their babies, if the child was falling behind and the nurse had the child by the arm, she would tug.
I hope none of you have to deal with this. we still don't know how it happened. I am pretty sure it happened at day care but Patti couldn't tell us anything. trust your instincts, you can tell when something is not right. I didn't believe that but now I do. And how in teh world did my parents survive 6 kids and all our accidents!!!

Dizylizy Oh God, I was crying when I was reading your post. I hate hate hate going to the ER. Because they ALWAYS make you wait. Been there done that. (stratch IN eye) But the arm thing sounds painful :( Thank you for sharing your story. I'll definitely be more careful when I put Parker in her carseat, clothes, or Bjorn and make sure I dont pull and twist her arms or legs. Poor Harry, I am glad he has good parents who took him right to the ER.

What has been everyone's experience with getting AF back? I haven't gotten it yet, but I've had WEEKS of premenstrual symptoms. Its driving me nuts. OMG! I was just thinking of asking this same question!
I haven't gotten it back yet either. I've been taking the mini-pill from about 8 weeks...no AF yet. ???
I just had an OBGYN (yearly) appointment about 2 weeks ago and had an ultrasound (concern over a 'mass' which was nothing) a week ago. So, I wasn't prego then (whew too!!).
Just wondering when it was going to come. I mean, DS will be 6 months on Tuesday. I'm not complaining that AF isn't here yet. :)

I haven't got AF back either. I thought it was to start about 6 months even if you were nursing. my doc wanted me to wean but then was worried that the hormones might make my cyst grow... but the ped wants Harry to have one bottle of formula a day for iron. I have held off on weaning and I am so much less stressed. so I am glad I am not the only one who hasn't started. maybe I will scope out the bf pages when munckin takes his nap....

I'm still exclusively breastfeeding, but for the iron, my ped recommended Tri Vi Sol. It's just a little drop that you give once a day. That way, I can keep BF him and not have to worry about iron. We found it at Target. :) I'll wean in due time...hopefully around a year or soon there after. I enjoy it too much.

dizy: i'm so sorry to hear about your ordeal and i also am thankful that you wrote about it. i am always lifting my DD into a sitting position by her hands b/c she uses them to pull herself up. have to be more careful about this.

regarding your doctor's suggestion to give your DC formula b/c of the iron, i'm so mad that s/he would even suggest that!!! that is a surefire way to ruin your BF relationship w/ Harry. i hate that the medical industry is so uneducated about BF. there are so many ways to give Harry iron, including the Tri Vi Sol drops that Jill wrote about. but also, what about iron fortified oatmeal? one serving of it every morning is the daily allowance for iron - says so right on the box. iron rich foods too, cooking on a cast iron skillet, etc. why would he go right to suggesting formula? the only way i could even see that as being an option is if Harry is really, really, really sick and in need of all the iron that he can get. sometimes i find myself "yessing" my pediatrician to death to get her to shut her stupid mouth but i see others have to deal w/ the same thing.

AF: i haven't gotten AF either. there is no "set time" for when you should get it back - it is all dependent on your body. i know plenty of people who didn't get it for the entire year or more that they breast fed and if your DC feeds very frequently (my DD still nurses every 2-3 hours) or still wakes up to nurse at night, the chances of you getting it are even slimmer. when you BF very frequently one hormone (prolactin) in your body elevates and it suppresses all the other hormones you need to menstruate/ovulate. that is the medical reason anyway. i know this b/c i had to research it since my OB wanted me to get a sonogram b/c he thought it was strange that i didn't have AF yet. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!!!!! this is why i get so angry about this kind of stuff and why i always urge women who BF to join some sort of support group and also not to be afraid to question your doctor from time to time!

sorry i am such a know-it-all. i'm just really passionate about certain issues.;)

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! My ped is the SAME way. I'm thinking in my head "um...that's not what the AAP recommends!". Not that everything they say is set in stone, but still...its odd that a Ped goes against their recommendations.

We also use the Tri Vi Sol drops.

I hear you all about the medicial industry. Our ped recommended starting on solids around 5-6 months so... But when we went to the ped for the last visit he told me I needed to feed her at LEAST 2 times a day. Mind that, DD (at the time) wasnt too interested in food and I wasnt gonna force food down her throat. She wanted BM. Now, at almost 8 months I give her food about 2 times a day along with as much BM as she wants.

Period: I was one of the unfortunate people, I got mine around 3-4 months postpartum. Yuck...but...I am like a week late and freaking out! Its probably nothing, maybe stress?

AF I got AF at 4mo. Have had it every month since. I'm not quite as reg. as before but still close enough.
Iron I asked our ped about iron supplement but he said it wasn't necessary if I was BFing and feeding cereal, that was enough. We do have to give flouride as it isn't in our water. It's a flouride multi-vitamin, need to check if it has iron in it.

We went to a fantastic infant playdate yesterday. There were 2 April babies, 1 May, and 4 July. All of us are first-time moms. It was so neat to be with other moms and babies that were going through the same things.
Connor started rolling in both directions this week. Before he did front-to-back and back-to-front but only his left shoulder which didn't really get him anywhere. Now he's starting to move. He rolled all over the living room today. He also lays on his stomach and "swims" with his arms and legs. I'm sure scooting and/or crawling aren't far off. Time to figure out what kind of baby gates to get. Have any of you started baby proofing? What do you have, incl. brands? We already have the cabinet locks and outlet covers left by the previous owners.
