Jarhead was a good movie. Not a great one, but it was interesting, and funny actually. It gave me insight into the daily life of the soldier.

Prime was really good! uma thurman and meryl streep were great, and the actor who plays meryl's son in the movie is such a cutie to watch!

I did like Jarhead too.
I have been so excited to see Shopgirl but I haven't seen it yet.
I am looking forward to Walk the Line, and Harry Potter!

I saw "Derailed" with Jennifer Aniston and Clive Owens yesterday.
It was a dark entertaining thriller/drama. I didn't even imagine it would end like it did, so the "twist" got me.
Did anyone else see this?

I would recommend Pride and Prejudice if you like british costume dramas. It was quite funny.

I ended up seeing Shopgirl... I wasn't sure I was gonna like it the more I got into the movie, but by the end... I thought it was REALLY good. It made me want to read the book!

OK, but are you an original Pride and Prejudice fan? I've read the book many times and watched the original BBC movie (7 hour movie with Colin Firth) and I am scared to see the new version...the previews looked like they butchered it to shreds...

See my sig :)
Outstanding film, really brings home a very troubled time in American History, and is eerily a statement on some of the things that are happening in our curent Administration.

Yep, I'm an original P&P fan, but I don't hold it in ultimate reverence. I've read the book more times than I can count. My favorite Austen film adaptation is Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility, which I think is just brilliant. This was good too. It's not as long and complete as the BBC one, and Matthew MacFadyen is not as yummy as Colin Firth. However, there are some things that I think this one got right that the BBC one didn't. It was a lot more believable that they were in the country. The Bennetts are really gentleman farmers -- they have enough money to keep servants, but only just. They don't live in grandeur. I think this movie really brings that to life, as well as highlighting the difference between the lifestyle of Bingley and Darcy and that of the Bennetts and the Lucases. Another thing -- Darcy wasn't as handsome, but he was more vulnerable. You could really see how much it cost him to confess his love to Elizabeth. And Mr. Collins was hilarious -- really plumbed the depths of what's really a comic role. And Jane was believably prettier than Elizabeth. I hate that they always cast beautiful girls as Lizzy and uglier girls as Jane. In this Jane was very conventionally pretty, and Lizzy was more tomboyish but had flashes of beauty.
It was shorter and adapted for a two hour movie instead of a six hour miniseries. The roles of Lydia and Wickham were pretty severely curtailed, and I wasn't a big fan of Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennett. They completely left out Bingley's married sister, though the unmarried one was still deliciously snobby. And the ending was a bit cheesy. It was still worth seeing though, especially if you're a Pride and Prejudice fan, ESPECIALLY if you're a fan of the book and not just the miniseries. It's rumored that Emma Thompson did a rewrite of the script -- I think she's awfully good at capturing the spirit and wit of Austen.

I wasn't crazy about the new P&P. I thought some of Austen's best lines were left out and replaced with some lame (groan-worthy) dialogue. Great-looking movie and I always like Judy Dench, but I thought it was just ok.
There you have it, two very different opinions, so I guess you'll have to go see for yourself. ;)
I also just saw Shopgirl and liked it a lot. It kind of reminded me of Lost in Translation, very quiet, not much happens, but an interesting character study.

I'm a Jane Austen whore, and I'm looking forward to the new movie version, even though I'm sure I'll have some issues with it. I'm glad to hear Jane was appropriately cast. ;) That's always bugged me.

haha yeah, the Jane casting in the bbc version always kind of bothered me..however ideals of beauty have definately changed over the years..
Alright, I might have to watch it...it won't be the same without Colin Firth! And I love the Mr Bennet character in the bbc version..it doesn't come out here until Friday for some reason..
