I am totally addicted to the Food Network! I can't get enough of it. It is my Saturday morning ritual to wake up before DH, and snuggle on the couch with my doggies and watch Giada, Ina and Michael Chiarello! I also love to watch the "Unwrapped," series. :D

emc05
06-30-2005, 03:06 PM
I love all of the same shows as well!! Especially Everyday Italian and Barefoot Contessa!! MMMmmm!!!!

Unwrapped reminds me of those little field trips Mr. Rogers used to "take us" on. :D

My favorites are Ina, Michael Chiarello, Bobby Flay and Alton Brown. Oh, and Paula Dean cracks me up.

For the rest (I think I wrote most of this on the other board ;) ):
Rachel Ray - annoys the crap out of me, but I can't look away! And I use her recipes more than anyone else's - go figure.
Giada - "The Mad Smiler" and her microphones are on too loud (CHOP! CRUNCH! SIZZLE!) but I like her recipes
Emeril - ridiculous audience, hate the murmur noises as he seasons
Sandra Dee - Take your store food and matchy matchy curtains and GO AWAY!!!

And yes, I'm addicted - I watch it constantly. CONSTANTLY - it's the first channel I go to when I turn on the TV. I even watch the shows I don't like - I just have to!

I have every single episode (I think) of Good Eats on my Tivo. :o So I guess I'd have to say yes.

I also like Barefoot Contessa, Everyday Italian, and Michael Chiarello.

I watch America's Test Kitchen, Simply Ming, and Everyday Food on PBS.

It seems I have a problem. :)

I am SO addicted to Good Eats! I can stand to watch a little Emeril and Rachel Ray as well. They are constantly "feeding" my addiction! :D

I can't wait until they have the show from the guys who won the contest to be the next Food Channel superstar (was that what it was called?). It should be interesting to see how they have trained them to be like the other chefs.

Dan & Steve!! They seem hilarious! I really do hope they turn out to be as funny and entertaining as they did during the competition!!!

Totally addicted, which is horrible when you have gestational diabetes and can't eat anything yummy!:(

I love Iron Chef, $40 A Day, Unwrapped, Secret Life Of, Top 5, and Barefoot Contessa. Most of the time I just have it on for background noise regardless of what program is on!

I am totally addicted. Especially to the Saturday morning lineup:

Low Carb and Lovin' It
Calorie Commando
How to Boil Water (I think Tyler Florence is cute)
Paula's Home Cooking (Gotta love the South!)
30 Minute Meals
Everyday Italian

Semi-Homemade Cooking needs to GO AWAY! Sandra Lee is an example of how ANYONE can get on television. You open a few cans and think that's a TV show?

I like Emeril Live, and even my husband gets into it because Emeril is such a wise guy and it's funny. Also the Bobby Flay grilling/BBQ shows. I'd love to go to his restaurant in NYC.

And $40 a Day - my word, how great would it be to travel all around and be on TV trying great restaurants, and get paid for it?

Another Foodtv addict here! Our tv is always on either Foodtv or HGTV. I LOVED the food network reality show- it was great! I really hope they do it again and for a longer amount of time.

I {heart} Alton Brown! If I had TiVo, I'd have every episode taped like you, ee_chick!

I watch Rachael Ray and find her recipes useful, but she annoys the heck out of me. If my DH hears Emeril come on, he usually comes in the room to check to make sure I'm alive, because I just can't stand him and his whole *bam* schtick. (But, I would still want to eat at one of his restaurants because his food looks awesome, it's his personality I can't stand!)

Along with everyone else, I just love: Barefoot Contessa, Everday Italian, and anything Bobby Flay. I think on Giada's show the *extra* sound in the microphone is done purposely. You know, hearing her pinch the salt, cut, chop. I like the sounds, it makes me hungry. I also like Food 911 with Tyler, Food Finds and one other one.....oh, $40 a Day!

Does anyone like Good Eats? I hate that show.

I absolutely love the food network. I watch almost all of the shows. Hard to go on a diet when you watch cooking shows. I like Iron Chef America but not the original iron chef that much anymore. I really like Paula Deen--- one day I am going to her restaurant. Rachel Ray's show is good and I like her recipes but sometimes she gets a little too happy about cooking. But she can be funny. And give me 40 a day. Wow lucky woman. Anyone else think Tyler Florence is hot. Wow come cook me a meal anytime. Does Food 911 have any new shows?

Oakley
07-01-2005, 07:50 AM
Ooh- I love Paula Dean too and I'd love to go to her restaurant. I'm not even that into southern food! :) I watched her wedding special and it was really touching.

*waving hand!* Me too!

I love:
Rachael Ray - even though she is a bit annoying sometimes
Paula Deen - we love Savannah and southern cooking, even though I think we counted once and during one whole show she used like 6 sticks of butter!
Everyday Italian - love the recipes
Food 911 - Tyler Florence is cute - good food too.

I also like Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello too.

The Barefoot Contessa lady kind of gets on my nerves for some reason - I hardly ever watch her - and Alton Brown annoys my husband so I always am made to change the channel when he's on. I like his scientific approach to some things.

I don't like Boil Water a whole lot - the girl just sits there and talks most of the time and doesn't do much else.

I know this isn't the Food Channel, but has anyone seen the new show (I can't remember the network now - maybe the style channel?) called
Foody Call ?

I also miss Nigella Bites on the style network.

Another Food Network junkie here! Tyler Florence is cute, and I've tried many of his recipes before and they've always turned out really well. I LOVE his chicken marsala recipe. I also like Everyday Italian. I got my bruschetta, mannicotti, and stuffed shells with arabiatta sauce recipes from her. They're all big hits in my house. Rachel Ray can be a bit eccentric, but her show is good for people who are busy and don't have time to cook in the evenings. Did anyone see her Hawaiian Luau show? I cooked everything from that episode a couple nights ago and it was fabulous and fun!

I'm really glad Dan and Steve won the contest; they seem like a lot of fun!

I am, and I don't even cook or bake that much anymore! :o

Barefoot Contessa
Everyday Italian
Sara's Secrets
30 Minute Meals
$40 A Day

I love the Food Network! My favorites are...

Paula Deen
30 Minute Meals
Everyday Italian (My husband is 1/2 italian, so I try to pay close attention to this one!)
$40 a day
Semi-Homemade

And I anticipate another one of my favorite shows in the fall will be the winner of the food network competition.

Just Great! No one put SPOILER in their posts and now I know who won the competition. I was hoping to catch it in the rerun some time this weekend. I'll still watch it, but I can't believe I know :sigh: so sad :(

But I do love the Food Channel, although I mostly just watch Food 911, 30 Minute Meals (have a couple of her cookbooks) and Alton Brown. The others I can give or take.

Me too, me too. I love Barefoot Contessa and Paula Deen. Used to watch a lot of 30 minute meals, but burned out on that. Have a couple RRay cookbooks...good stuff in there. Also, the Barefoot Contessa recipes I've tried have gotten raves. Her Lemon Cake is the best EVAH.

I really don't know why we pay for all these cable channels, because I only watch about 3 of them - one of which is the Food Network! I LOVE watching cooking shows!

It's amazing the things I've learned by watching so much FN. We were eating at Calfornia Pizza once, and my cousin didn't know what the bread was on a certain sandwich. I knew right away, and how to pronounce it. She said, "How do you know all this stuff?" and I said, "Because I watch the Food Network." :D

My favorites:
Giada - Her recipes are fairly simple, and always look so good. I LOVE LOVE the sound from her micrphones! That, and she's very pretty in a simple way.

Paula - She's silly, and all her food looks so sinfully delicious. I like how she says, "oll" for "oil". And her sons aren't too bad to look at either. ;)

Racheal - I really like 30 Minute Meals, but she can grate on my nerves. However, she always has nice little stories to tell.

Martha - When her show was on, it was probably my favorite. I wish they'd bring it back. :( It was a good thing. :D

Ina - For some reason, Barefoot Contessa absolutely captivates me! I've made a lot of her recipes, and a lot of them are VERY simple. Her house is gorgeous, and I LOVE her table settings!! The only thing that bothers me is sometimes she can be sloppy.

Iron Chef Japan - I watch this EVERY night! It's one of my all-time favorite shows. Although, I can count on one hand how many of their dishes has actually looked good. :) The best part is the beginning when the Chairman bites into the pepper. That is just too cheesy!

Good Eats - I only watch this when it's about something that interests me. For example, the cake/cake decorating episode. I learned alot from that. I also like to listen to him on Iron Chef America - he has TONS of food knowledge!

Semi-Homemade - I love everything about this show, BUT the host. I love the themes, the colors, and her table-scapes are gorgeous. BUT, I absolutely cannot stand her!! Not that I'm staring, but does she need a more supportive bra, or what??? It's so distracting, that I can barely watch. ack!

And that's my $.02. :)

Good Eats my favorite my SIL went to High School with Alton (he was a senior she was a freshman I think)

Rachel Ray annoys the piss out of me, if I hear her say "nice smokey flavor" one more time I will puke!

Paula Dean awesome, I find her very intriguing being a southerner myself

Tyler Florence he boils my water all right ;)

Bobby Flay just a jerk

But I still watch all these shows all the time, funny thing is hubby is a much better cook than I am so h actually tests them.

and i love Good Eats...its nice that someone tells you all the scienctific things you dont think about when cooking

My Favs:
Alton Brown
Rachael Ray
Ina Garten
Giada deLaurentis (DH has a HUGE crush on her LOL)
Paula Deen--her accent cracks me up... especially when she's trying to say Italian ingredients and stuff...

unfortunately we don't have cable anymore, but we (I) still get to watch Food Network when I'm at the ILs 'cuz MIL is just crazy about Rachael Ray LOL... though occasionally we'll have to fight DH & FIL so we don't end up watching the golf channel

Just bumping this up since Food Network has changed its lineup! :)

I'm still regularly watching 30 Minute Meals, Barefoot Contessa, and Everyday Italian. I've added in Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger. And I am thrilled that Nigella Lawson is FINALLY on Food Network! :D I watch every episode, even if it's an old Nigella Bites that I've seen 100 times. :o

Did anyone watch the latest Next Food Network Star? I really enjoyed the show itself, but I never thought that any of the contestants really *deserved* their own show, but maybe I'm too critical. ;)

DH and I DVR Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy and we really enjoy it. It's a really fun show. I like his show, too, but I don't watch it regularly.

Anyone watch Simply Delicioso? I DVRed the first episode, but I haven't watched it yet.

I sometimes feel I'm the only person who is not taken with Paula Deen. I can't stand her accent, I think she's crude, common and stupid sounding and I have never seen her make anything I have any desire to make. Yuck, yuck to her.
On the other hand, I love the Barefoot Contessa. She's elegant, classy, well-spoken and someone who was chosen for her cooking skills. :) I would use any of her recipes.
As far as Rachael Ray, I enjoy her travel shows, but a little of her goes a long way.
I really enjoyed Feasting on Asphalt last year and am looking forward to this year's version as Alton and his crew travel up (or is it down) the Mississippi River.

Paula has changed since her earlier days - I watched a couple of her Paula's Party shows and could not stand her anymore, I was a big fan before that. I don't know if she was told to be more "out there" or what happened, but it's like she got more vulgar or something. She used to be charming.

I love Giada, but am branching out since I'm kind of done with mozzarella, tomato and basil all the time :D Met her at a book signing and she was a sweetheart, although I decided not to buy any more of her books since many recipes are on the net for free. I find her recipes to be reliable and I have made many of them.

Rachael - I started out loving her, watched her faithfully every night, but frankly, many of her recipes are not as "healthful" as she claims and her personality bugs me too much to watch her anymore. Her travel shows, ugh, what a joke, I'm sorry, but her tipping is atrocious and everything is so set up that I do not trust anything she recommends.

I love Barefoot Contessa, but I could do with less shots of her silverware and BMW :D I have made several recipes and have been very happy with them.

Ellie Krieger - I want to like her show but there's something about her that puts me off. I don't know what it is. I even TiVO it but I can't watch the whole thing through.

Nigella - LOVE HER! I have every cookbook and have made several recipes to good results. I read her chapter on baby food when I was pregnant and it made me relax about the whole thing. Well, a little.

It bugs me they have let people like Sara Moulton and Mario Batali go in favor of "personalities" - I feel like the quality of Food Network in general has come down. I am also sick of all the cake competitions, I mean, I get it, Colette Peters makes great cakes!!! :D As far as Next Food Network Star goes, I think they had picked Rory to win and then, oops, people picked Amy. So far I am not impressed with anyone who has won.

Sigh. Ok, that was a rant.

pontmarie - we must share the same brain, because I was voicing the very same thoughts to DH the other day! I miss the 'good old days' of Food Network, back when Two Fat Ladies, Ming Tsai, Sara Moulton, and Jamie Oliver were on. Nowadays....well, it's become the Emeril/Rachael Ray channel.

DH and I are huge fans of Iron Chef - but not the new one, the ORIGINAL one. With the bad dubbing. :) That has now been relegated to a 4 a.m. time slot! SO not fair.

I actually do like Emeril, but I prefer Essence of Emeril to Emeril Live. The whole BAM! shtick is getting old. Other current shows I like - Ace of Cakes, 30 Minute Meals, Everyday Italian, and Tyler's Ultimate.

Shows I absolutely HATE - Semi Homemade with Sandra Lee (she can take her 'tablescape' and SHOVE IT), and whatever that show is with the scary Robin Miller chick, and Paula's Party. Now, I watch Paula's other show now and then, and I do like some of her recipes. But on her new show, I just don't need to see her getting all horny with audience members. Eww.

ITA!!

I am not in love with the channel like I used to be. I still have my fav shows, but I too am sick of the competitions with the same people competing and I really can't take another "Unwrapped" show.

And who is Rachel Ray sleeping with at Food Network? Okay, just kidding...that's just a joke my friends and I always toss around. But how many freakin' shows is she on and how many more will she get before it's all over with?

I feel the same way about "Next Food Network Star". Haven't really cared much for the show or their winners. Of the 3, Guy is okay, but I'm so not a fan of the "Party Line" guys and not a fan of Amy and if Rory had won, I wasn't a fan of her either.

Since Sara Moulton came up, I've got to ask this: am I the only one who thought she looked pissed off on her show? I've caught it here and there, and she always gave off this vibe like "I can't believe I'm wasting my time here".

I TiVo Good Eats, and we'll watch Giada on Saturday morning. Alton Brown is my not-so-secret Cable TV boyfriend (John Krasinski being my Network TV boyfriend) and, well, there's something hypnotic about Everyday Italian. I think it's the quasi-porn music.

OOOH! This thread is right up my alley.

I'll be the first to admit that I LOVE Rachael Ray. I think it's because she's from our area though. Her recipes are good, but more then likely take longer then 30 minutes.

Giada, Paula, and Ina are all fantastic as well. They each have their own quirks in their personalities that I think is so funny (for example, I think Ina is a horny b*!). Their recipes are fantastic, and pretty simple for the most part.

I hate Sandra Lee. After all, aren't most of the recipes semi-homemade anyway? It's not like we all have grown our own stuff. Rachael Ray uses short cuts too. Her tablescapes are cute, but very unlikely. And, I think she likes her alcohol a little too much ;).

Alton Brown is my favorite guy. I have yet to see his road show, but DH puts on Good Eats everynight before bed.

I am completely addicted to the Food Network--DH hates it. 99% of the time when you turn the TV on, it's tuned to TFN. The other 1% it's tuned to E!. :o

I also miss the old days, but I do like some of the "newer" personalities. I'm a huge fan of the Contessa, though I'm more into her recipes than the show itself. She definitely is very pleased with herself with whatever she's making though! I also like Giada, but I like her recipes more than the show. I agree there's something hypnotic about it! Plus, I was kind of put off by her when she was judging on the Food Network Star show. They even caught her making faces at a couple of things. She just came off as very uppity and holier than thou. Now, I have a hard time watching the show. I also love Paula, but I agree about the horniness of her Party show--it's really weird! But, I've always enjoyed watching her, especially the specials she's had on--the one where she and Michael went to Europe and her kids surprised her was awesome. I could watch that one again and again. I also like Tyler Florence--he's cute. ;)

And ITA about Robin Miller. DH makes fun of her bug eyes whenever she's on. It's a little scary. I semi-like Ellie Krieger, but can't see myself making any of her stuff. And speaking of semi, I HATE Sandra Lee. Ugh, her stuff is just disgusting. I once read an article (or was it on here or WC) that said something to the effect of "squirting cream into a store bought cupcake does not a chef make". :D Amen.

I really enjoy watching Ace of Cakes. They make such incredible creations and all the personalities in the bakery are interesting.

Giada bugs me (maybe it's the lollipop head) but her recipes do turn out nicely and I like the emphasis on fresh ingredients. Rachael Ray is fine in small doses- but for me her show is more about personality than food. Of all the hosts on the channel, the one whose recipes are most impressive to me is Ina Garten. I have yet to make a recipe of hers that did not turn out totally delicious.

People I don't watch: Paula Deen (just not my style and I prefer for my food to not cause major artery blockage), Sandra Lee (the whole concept is lost on me). I also don't care for Alton Brown.

I always enjoy The Next Food Network Star. I'm so glad Amy won this season. I would definitely watch her show.

I love Food Network! I watch it so much that my 3 year old even enjoys it and asks to "watch cooking".

I have a small crush on Bobby Flay. On the one hand I find him terribly arrogant and annoying but at the same time I just love him. His show Hot Off the Grill (or something like that) was the first FN show I ever watched.

I agree with you all on Sandra Lee. I've made a few of her things and they are just not good at all. It also really annoys me that she's also dressed in whatever "theme" her show is.

I love Alton Brown. Good Eats is one of my favorites. I really enjoy how he breaks down ingredients and really explains everything about it and helps create delicious foods from it. I do love Paula Deen, too. She reminds me of my grandma and all the delicious, artery clogging foods she makes :p. I'm a little burned out on Rachel Ray, though I do make a lot of her recipes. I also love Giada and Barefoot Contessa.

And I, too, love to watch Ace of Cakes.

Kate&Joey

Rosebud: DH watches Ace of Cakes, too. I have never seen it though; he watches it when he travels...I have obviously created a Food Network monster! ;)

lauren: I feel the exact same way about Bobby Flay...his arrogance is somehow very appealing. I love the Boy Meets Grill episodes with Stephanie (who is now his wife); they seem so happy together.

I'm so glad that Good Eats is now on at 8:00 instead of Emeril. I don't sit down and watch it, but I listen to it while I'm cooking, feeding the dogs, etc.

I used to watch Paula Deen, but since I never make any of her recipes, it was kind of a waste of my "tv time." I do want to watch the Europe trip special though.

As for Sandra Lee, DH refers to her as Crazy. As in, "change the channel, Crazy's show is on." :p

ITA about Ina Garten's recipes: everything is delicious; they are mostly easy; and use readily available, but fresh / quality ingredients. I only have 2 of her cookbooks so they are on my wish-list!

Wow! Tell us how you really feel. :D What a comparison! So because Ina is well-spoken, you would use any of her recipes? Anyway....

I agree and think both ladies are very different and have a different perspective to offer the home cook. Taking a line from the movie Ratatouille, anyone can cook. That's how I feel about Paula and a couple of other people on FN. They obviously appeal to a large group of people and make them feel "at home" in the kitchen and make them feel like they can cook.

I agree with other ladies that lately Paula has "kicked it up" in full gear on Paula's Party and is quite over the top, but other than that, I like her. I've used a number of her "low-butter" recipes and have loved every one of them. After reading her biography, I liked her even more b/c I understand her drive and her passion for her family and her work.

I like Barefoot Contessa too and like many of her recipes. I just made her Blue Cheese Cole Slaw yesterday after watching her make it on tv and found myself drooling. I think she also brings a nice perspective to the network--- different but not necessarily better than anyone else's just because she's in the Hamptons, is well-spoken and drives a BMW.

I am obsessed with the Food Network...

Alton Brown - I just love him, I always learn so much about the science of cooking and I love his queer little props :)

Rachael Ray - I could take her or leave her. I try to keep the volume way down, her personality and her voice just gets on my nerves. And her recipes aren't that great.

Paula Deen - interesting, but way too fattening for my liking. I have seen a few recipes that I want to try. I think her Party show is like a train wreck, you can't help but look, a guilty pleasure :p

Ina - I really like some of her recipes, they look very simple and easy to make, but I think she has no personality whatsoever! Very bland, to me at least.

Giada - Hit or miss with her, her mouth bothers me for some reason. There is just something odd about it...

Tyler Florence I just love him, even though he's gained a bit of weight since his Food 911 days. His Ultimate show is hit or miss, sometimes way more involved than I'd like to be in a recipe.

Emeril he just bugs me... I need to be in the mood to watch him.

Sandra Lee - Her tablescapes are kinda cool, but who the heck has the time or the $ for something so elaborate???? Her food never looks good...

I forgot to mention another one of my favs is "Good Deal with Dave Lieberman". It's enough that he's kinda cute, but I like the easy and inexpensive meals that he makes. He always puts together a nice and simple meal that can easily be used for a dinner for two or for entertaining.

I've only seen Sugar Rush a few times (how often is it on?) but I really like that one, too. The guy who owns that bakery is so cute & passionate about his work- and I love his creations. YUM! When I was in D.C. last year I randomly walked by his place, Cake Love and had such a fan girl moment. :)

OOh, I forgot about Dave Lieberman. He's adorable (and Jewish and from Philly, so he has even more appeal to me! :p). My 28 yr old single sister refers to him as "my future husband Dave Lieberman". I WISH I could fix them up--how cool would that be?! :D

I also love Ace of Cakes. I agree that everyone in the shop has an interesting personality and the differences make it fun to watch.

I also read PD's biography and loved it. I agree her recipes are way fattening, but I just enjoy watching her and I think her sons are adorable. I will say that I've made her caramel corn (the only thing I've made of hers) and it is to die for.

I've also had great luck with BC's recipes, though some are definitely better than others (am actually making her PB chocolate chunk cookies as we speak!). The only thing I made that completely failed was the beef bourgineon. It was disgusting, but probably entirely my fault as I know there are folks on here that have made it. :o

Sue--hi! ;) Funny you should mention Tyler's gaining weight! I noticed that too and figure it's what happens when you're a chef with multiple cooking shows--he's also a newlywed too. So cute.

Cakelove products aren't universally admired around these parts - they tend to inspire love 'em or hate 'em feelings in a lot of people. The Washington Post's food critic is firmly against cakelove, and I have to say I agree with him. The flavor combinations are interesting, but the cakes are dry and the frosting is thin. The owner gets a lot of mileage out of his personal story, as well as his insistence that if you don't like his cake it's because you're used to cheap bakeries and don't understand quality.

DH and I were just talking about that the other day when we were watching it! They're cakes are amazing!! I'm sure they have bakers in their shop to bake their cakes. However, i do know some cake places around here do order out their cakes and have them frozen. It would be interesting to find out for sure though!

The cake I tasted from Charm City Cakes was really good. Remember, Duff did go to culinary school to study pastry and all. He just happens to be a really amazing artist as well as chef.

(I went to college with Duff, not that he'd remember me or anything. He worked in our dorm and was known for being a bit crazy. I remember when I first heard he was going to culinary school after graduation - he baked a fruit tart or something and brought it in to class. Our professor announced then that Duff was going to CIA and I was stunned.)

I love Paula Deen! I make her pumpkin gooey butter cake for Thanksgiving every year. I have also made her banana pudding, strawberry pretzel salad and more and everything has always turned out awesome. Plus, I just lover her personality, it's comforting in some way. She does get a little crazy on her party show however. I also like to watch the Deen boys on Road Tasted. Jamie is my TV boyfriend...... I would love to go to their restaurant in Savannah.

My other fav is Barefoot Contessa. It's more of a calming show and her food always looks so yummy. I haven't made any of her recipes, yet. But, I'm sure I will soon.

$40 a day, I would love to be able to do this. It just looks like so much fun getting to go to all of those places and try all the different foods.

I have also been watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and I really like that, also.

A friend of my from grade school got married last month and i was sitting waiting for the ceremony to start. I heard someone talking and knew i recognized the voice from somewhere and when i looked over, sure enough it was warren brown!! i got all giggly and was telling my DH and friend that someone from the foodnetwork was at the wedding. they didn't believe me but sure enough after the ceremony the wedding caterer came out and practically jumped into his arms, telling him what a fan she was, and then took a picture with him. it was funny b/c i was running around telling people that there was a celebrity at the wedding but no one knew who he was - i guess i just assumed everyone watched the FN, lol! it turns out he went to college with my friend...

I am a total addict. FN is on all day when I am home!

My favorite stars are Giada, Mario Batali, Alton Brown and Duff. My favorite shows are Iron Chef, Everyday Italian, Charm City Cake and The Next Food Network Star. (This season sucked though.)

I love the challenges and have watched the princess cake challenge 3 times now!

I really don't like Paula Deen much at all. Her recipes can be so gross. Once she made a banana/ham casserole and that was it for me. Blech!

Bobby Flay drives me insane. He just thinks he is so cool. I hate the concept for Throw-Down. A famous, gourmet chef finds regular people who have a specialty that they make really well and he wants to prove that he is better than them? I watch it just to see him lose!

I have a love/hate relationship with Rachael Ray. I can't stop watching her yet she annoys me and her recipes are usually pretty gross.

My all time favorite time of year is the holiday season. I love watching Season's Eatings and all of the holiday specials! DH thinks I'm a nut but he sure likes all of the food I can cook because I got the recipes and techniques from FN!

I can't stand Bobby Flay, either. I watched an episode of Iron Chef where he and Rick Bayless were on and he beat Rick Bayless. At Mexican food, nonetheless. How the hell did that happen?! (I heart Rick). And how is Sandra Lee even on the Food Network?

For those of you that hate Sandra Lee (and I'm one of them. Just like to watch for the snark factor) you've got to check out the boards on Television Without Pity (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showforum=743). I'm a little old school.

I have loved Alton Brown for what feels like forever. We met him at a book signing (a few years ago) and he treated us like we were his friends. He makes cooking so much easier.

Rachel's recipes are easy, I do like that. She use to annoy me back in the day, but I guess I have just gotten use to her. She has some great recipes that make for great meals.

Tyler was adorable back in his Food 911 days and to this day his recipes are amazing! They always turn out pretty tasty.

I miss the Naked Chef. I use to think that Jaime Oliver was annoying too, but his recipes turn into some damn good food! I have watched all of his shows and wish that he would come back.

MichelleRenee-I'm with you, I miss Ming Tsai too.

I used to love Nigella on that other network. I keep forgetting to tivo her show on the Food Network, so I haven't seen her show yet. That's the problem with tivo, sometimes, you just don't know what's on tv any more and when. ;)

Oh and I loooove Ace of Cakes. I don't miss the show, ever, but I am biased. Yes, their cakes are made in the bakery, NOT FROZEN.
Yes, they are damn tasty flavors and frostings!
And, all the people that work in the bakery are interesting, funny, and creative. Did I mention talented?!
p.s. MollJay, it's Mary Alice. ;)

Its funny a few people have mentioned Season's Eatings, I love that time of year and I've actually been watching a tape of Season's Eatings programs from last year the last few nights. I don't know, I guess its been the chilly weather makes me think of Christmas. :)

I haven't read this whole thread so I'm sure its been mentioned but at Target they are now offering 3 DVD packs of different Food Network Programs. So far I've picked up two Good Eats (to add to my other tapes/DVD collection) A Paula Dean and then there's a holiday pack of Sarah Moulton (not really a fan) Barefoot Contessa and Paula Dean I like that one alot. They usually run about $20 or so. I've seen Rachel and Bobby packs previously, I'm just waiting for them to bring out Nigella. :D

Bobby Flay drives me insane. He just thinks he is so cool.

I actually had the opportunity to hang out with Bobby Flay a few weeks ago, and he was extremely nice. He wasn't full of himself at all, like I thought he would be. We went to a club, and he kept making sure that my friend and I liked the liquor that he ordered for the table, and even got up and danced with us. It was really a cool experience, and I will remember it for a really long time. When we were leaving (my gf and I), he gave us a hug and a kiss, and invited us out the next night with our DH's. We didn't go, but i wish we did.

So, all in all, MY view of him changed, because I always thought he was a cocky F#&k!

I used to like Paula and Racheal, but not so much anymore. It seems like they are both getting louder and crazier as they get more famous. Looking back at some of their earlier episodes, they were both a lot tamer.

I kind of like Sandra Lee. DH calls her the "Liquor Lady" because he always walks in on her show during cocktail time.

Major Food Network loving family, here. DH and I and both our kids! I love that it's a channel that the whole family can watch all the time.

DD loves it so much, she went as a chef last year for halloween and DS went as a lobster.

My faves are Alton, Ina, Giada, Gale Gand, Michael Chiarello, Duff and Paula Deen although I HATE Paula's Party. I also like Sara Moulton and miss her old show, Cooking Live. I cannot STAND Rachael Ray and Sandra Lee (both their recipes and their personalities).

I do miss Ming Tsai but I have caught him on PBS a few times. Also on PBS, If you happen to catch Everyday Food, I highly recommend their recipes. I've been getting the magazine since Martha released it a few years ago and there are so many good recipes in each issue, I have kept all 47 of the issues and seriously use them several times a week. I use them more than any cookbook I own.

One thing I miss on Food Network is new episodes of Sweet Dreams with Gale Gand. She is the most amazing pastry chef.

I checked out Amy's show and thought it was pretty good, though it seemed like she tried to pack a lot in. And she never really said how long to cook things for, so I couldn't get a sense of how long it took to make anything. MichelleRenee...well there was the Sandra Lee Halloween special.

It was such a train wreck, I couldn't stop watching.

She had 3 different costume changes...let's see Cher, Liza and I forget the other but I just sat there watching the whole damn show telling my husband how much I can't stand this woman...or her recipes.

I really wanted John Besh to be the next Iron Chef but I guess Michael is OK too. I guess I should just be happy that a Clevelander won.

I was watching Throwdown the other night and it still kind of pisses me off. These poor people are known for being the best at what they do. that is who they are. They aren't rich and famous... just local people who do something great. And here comes Bobby Flay.... first lying to them saying they are being featured on Food Network, and then saying "Gotcha! You are really just a prop for another one of my stupid shows. I am going to try to convince people that you aren't the best!"

It does help that I have only seen Bobby win once. I kepe telling DH that I need to become the "best" at something so BF will challenge me and I can tell him what a jerk he is!

I am totally in mourning today over JB's loss last night. He and I are from the same hometown (he still lives there! and, I realized I went to grade school with his sister-in-law!) and we really wanted him to win. Aside from the whole local-boy-done-well thing, it would have meant seeing those pretty blue eyes on a semi-regular basis ;)

I saw JB when he was the challenger too and I just loved him. I was so excited when he made it to the final two and I really thought he would win.

It's funny.... we just had a food show in town and Alton Brown was one of the celebrity chefs (along with Giada and Duff!!). He was on my radio station one morning being interviewed and they kept asking questions about the next Iron Chef and totally talking Michael up since he is from Cleveland. at the end of the interview they were mentioning Michael and called him "the next iron chef champion" and then they quickly said "sorry" and moved on to another topic. I kind of got the feeling that Alton had already told them Michael had won and they accidentally let it slip.

Anyways, how sad is it that I missed the show?!? Tickets were $25 each and parking was astronomical. I am so mad that I had to miss it. :(

I've seen JB on a lot of different things and watched him from the beginning, I just KNEW he was going to win, I thought he showed class and talent through the whole thing. So I'm still kinda bummed that he lost.

Nathan Lyon - I've caught that a few times and I think he's pretty good, he's got high energy but he always had that when he was on NFNS.

Was anyone else kinda disapointed with the programming this weekend? It seemed like a lot of the shows were supposed to be geared towards Thanksgiving and they just kinda felt flat. I know a station can't show all their steller Thanksgiving programming 2 weeks before thanksgiving but still if you're going to talk up "Let's talk Turkey" so much you should have the programming to back it up.

Alton Brown- I was flipping channels Sunday night and came across Turner classic movies and who should be sitting next to some guy talking about movies but Alton Brown!!! Apparently they were showing AB's favorite movies. One of them was some movie from Czech from the 1960's. And they were also talking about egg salad LOL!! I didn't watch much because they went right into the movie but I thought it was cool.

Food Network Stars are being featured on Wheel of Fortune this week. Paula Deen was on last night. Sandra Lee is on tonight. I am not sure if anyone else from FN will be on.

My new least favorite show: Diners Drive Ins and Dives. It is just the same crap every episode. Yeah, we get it. All these diner owners work a thousand hours a week and make everything from scratch. Blah, blah, blah.

What's up with Rachael Ray's new kitchen? I happened to flip on Food Network when her show was on the other day and noticed it.

Is the Thanksgiving special (hosted by Tyler) going to be on again? I missed it.

I just found out that Emeril Live has been cancelled. The move from 8pm to 7pm was the indication that something was up. Here's something he wrote on his website (http://www.emerils.com/emeril-message.html).

I might have missed this discussion, but has anyone seen that Nathan Lyon from Next Food Network Star has a show on discovery health? I was flipping and saw it-"A Lion in the Kitchen"-and it seemed like he was trying way too hard.

I just found out that a friend of mine is dating this guy! So random.

So, what are the best Christmas/Holiday specials on Food Network? Anything I should set my TIVO for? I've never really tuned into their holiday-specific shows before.

Man, I missed all the discussion about NIC. DH and I really wanted John Besh to win. We'd seen him on IC and on a seafood cooking challenge previously. He just seemed so much more polished than Michael Symon.

Michelle - I'm so with you on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. My parents love that show though and DVR it so they can watch each episode. Then they feel the need to call and tell me about them. Bah!

I haven't watch much of the holiday specials yet, but I do love the commercial where the animated Paula Deen replaced the snowman's carrot nose with a stick of butter!

I love the little animated commercials but the stars featured are so limited. The only ones I have seen are Giada, Rachael Ray, Paula Deen, Alton Brown, Guy Fieri and Bobby Flay. (Maybe another... can't remember) What about Duff, Emeril, Mario??

I just watched the Iron Chef Challenge on Christmas Desserts with Paula Deen and Cat Cora against Robert Irvine and Tyler. The recipes looked divine. I'd like to try the challah dessert, wafers or the dessert drink. I can't find the recipes for this show on the website. Anyone else see them?

Rachael Ray is getting a new FN show.
http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=289107&GT1=7703

I am a little disappointed. She is just everywhere these days and it is becoming too much! And everything she does is pretty much the same.

A new prime-time series, "Rachael's Vacation," will premiere Jan. 12, the network announced Monday. Viewers will follow Ray as she discovers cities, countries, foods and lifestyles around the world.

And how is that different form Tasty Travels or $40 a Day?

Yeah, I'm kind of sick of Rachael Ray. Talk about over-saturation. You're right, I don't see how that it any different from the other travel shows she has done.

I gotta give her credit though... if she found a way to travel all over the world for free (and to get paid for it!) good for her!

ITA. I don't think it's any different from the other 2 (well, without the $40 a day premise). She's always saying how busy she is, how can she have time to do another show? Actually, I wonder if this is going to replace Giada's travel show since she's pregnant?

I hope not. I really like Giada and find Rachel annoying.

Is anyone else getting sick of Rachel Ray?? The other day we were at Meijers and found her holiday CD!!!!!!! Apparently she doesn't sing on it but its her favorite christmas songs!! Its ridiculous!! She'll slap her name on everything. I'm getting so sick of her..

I just heard about this on the radio here... it seems that the FN is revising their entire show lineup and veterans like Emeril and Mario Batali are left out in the cold. That is such a shame b/c I have always loved Emeril.

I would have to agree with the majority do we really need another Rachael Ray show... ???

My husband finds out more info than I do....but he was saying that Mario was actually moving his show to PBS. He will still do Iron Chef, but his show will be on a different station.

StarJune> We watched that Iron Chef. The only recipe I was interested in was the Velveeta Fudge from Paula......I was able to find that by doing a search of Paula's recipes. I wonder if you tried a search of Cat's recipes with some key words you might be able to find some of them. If I run across them, I'll post.

Thanks Smilin. I did check out her website but it only has 2 archived recipes from 2006.

I noticed that the same show did come on again but it was at the very end and I did not have the time to watch it. It will probably come on again so I need to do a search. Then I can at least get the exact names.

If you do come across anything please post... that would be great. :)

 Geez. I was never a big RR fan, but she gets more and more annoying every year. And if I hear her say "EVOO- that's Extra Virgin Olive Oil" one more time I am going to lose my mind. Saying "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" makes the abbreviation completely unnecessary.

Gosh, I could come up with dozens if things Rachael Ray says and does all the time that drive me crazy.

A biggie:

I just recently ate at one of Mario Batali's restaurants - Otto. (http://www.ottopizzeria.com/menu.html) delicious. I like him!

I like to try recipes from Rachel but not a huge fan of watching her anymore. I saw her once here in NYC out & about. Much rather watch Giada or Ina. DH & I know Ellie IRL so we try to catch her on TV too. She's a sweetie!!

Just bumping this up as Food Network has changed its lineup again! :)

Old standbys that I still DVR: 30 Minute Meals, Barefoot Contessa, Everyday Italian, and Healthy Appetite.

Newer shows that are also on the DVR: Nigella Express, Jamie at Home, and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

New shows I would DVR if I had more time: Down Home with the Neelys and Simply Delicioso.

LOVING Jamie at Home. I probably wouldn't make most of his recipes, but I adore the concept.

Anyone know what happened to Gourmet Next Door? I watched all the new episodes and haven't seen any more.

What's everyone else watching these days?

Kate&Joey, I watch Barefoot Contessa, Tyler Florence, Nigella and Ellie Krieger. Occasionally, I'll watch Giada or Paula. Don't think I've ever had a Paula recipe but she cracks me up. :)

Seriously. I just watched the episode about Greek diner food and I wanted to smack her. :)

Ooohh...forgot about Tyler Florence. :D Tyler's Ultimate should probably go on my "shows I would DVR if I had more time" list.

Giada has a new show? I hope they aren't replacing her old show? I loved her old show when I got the opportunity to watch it - although I was beginning to wonder just how low her necklines were going to get! If I ever mentioned Giada to my husband he wouldn't know who I was talking about until I said "you know, the hot looking girl who cooks Italian"

I'm kind of happy that they kicked Emeril's Live show to the Fine Living network because I can't stand that show...too much shtick, too much of his annoying personality, and too many recipes that I wouldn't make on a bet. Unfortunately they replaced it with those "Food Network Challenge" shows. The first few were interesting, but I'm sick of them now.

Paula Deen's new show, "Paula Deen's best dishes" or something like that is kind of good....it really depends on who her guest is. I like her in small doses - but really, must she lick EVERYTHING? I've been known to go to town on a brownie batter spoon, but I certainly wouldn't do it on tv!

Rachel Ray - I watch her 30 minute show pretty much everyday. I rarely make anything she makes exactly, but I get good ideas from her. I'm starting to get sick of seeing her face though - I'm waiting for the "Rachel Ray Bum-O Toilet Seat Covers"....its just a matter of time.

Is it just me or do they seem to be handing out "travel and talk about food" shows left and right these days? It's too much.
