I want to do red white and blue recipes for this weekend.

For example:

I would love to do a trifle that is red/white/blue, but can't find a recipe. Any ideas or recipes out there??

Shrimp Cocktail - red and white
Blue corn chips with salsa and sour cream - red, white and blue
Anything with blueberries and strawberries
chicken kabobs with red peppers and onions - red and white

Just some random ideas

Also last year I froze red and blue ice cubes (food coloring) and am actually nerdy enough to have a photo to share:

I haven't seen a trifle recipe, but I know I've seen a picture of one in the past few days. I'll hunt around at home tonight. I've also seen a shortcake done with a layer of blueberry jam/preserves and strawberries. I'll see if I can find that too.

I don't have a picture, but a few years ago, I made a meringue shell, and filled it with strawberries and blueberries, and topped with whipped cream. Super easy, except you can't really fill it too far in advance.

Isn't it handy that strawberries and blueberries are in season for the 4th of July? :D

Red White and Blue Trifle

http://cctvimedia.clearchannel.com/wxxa/rwb%20trifle.jpg

Ingredients
(2) 9" prepared cakes
2C Sliced Strawberries
2C Fresh Blueberries
2C Whipped Cream
1C Custard or Vanilla Pudding

In a large clear, decorative bowl or a Trifle dish, place cubes of yellow cake (on the segment I used a Pound Cake). Begin layering your fruits, custards and whipped cream making sure to watch the outside of your bowl to see the layering effect. Once all your ingredients are layered and remaining spaces are filled, refrigerate Trifel until you are ready to serve. If you have large pockets of visible air in your dish, when you add the cake, you can press down firmly and remove the pockets. ENJOY!

Yum! What great ideas. Thanks ladies! (I wonder why I didn't get email notification that there were responses? Off to the FAQ board. . . )

Jodi - I cracked up with the "and am actually nerdy enough to have a photo to share" My DH always asks why I take pictures of the food tables! I'm glad you had the picture, it makes things very clear! :)

Last year I made red velvet cupcakes and iced them with white frosting and put red, white and blue sprinkles on them. I just used a box cake mix.

So with that trifle, do I put the cake on the bottom and top? Or bottom, middle, and top? Sorry - I can't really tell from the picture and I'm making it tomorrow and this is the first I've heard of a trifle!

I believe you start with the cake and layer the ingredients-keep layering until you get to the top. So, theoretically, you could have possibly 3 layers of cake. Just my guess-I've never actually made a trifle before, either. Looks yummy-let us know how it turns out!

Ok, I just made it...looks good - cake on the bottom and in the middle. It doesn't look quite as professional as the pic, but decent enough for my first try :)

I made this for my sister in laws bbq. It was soooo good.

1 angel food cake
1 (16 ounce) container Cool Whip
8 ounces cream cheese
1 cup sugar, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 (3 ounce) package strawberry Jell-O gelatin dessert
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup water

Combine in medium saucepan 1/2 cup of sugar, cornstarch, Jello, lemon juice, and water.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil and thickens.
Set aside to cool slightly.
Stir in sliced strawberries.
Tear angel food cake into 1 inch pieces and toss with 2 cups of the Cool Whip.
Press into 9x13 inch pan (I use glass so you can see the pretty layers).
Set aside.
Combine cream cheese, 1/2 cup remaining sugar, and vanilla in mixer bowl.
Beat until smooth.
Stir in remaining Cool Whip.
Spread evenly over cake layer.
Pour cooled strawberry mixture over cream cheese layer, spreading to cover cake evenly.
Refrigerate 2 to 3 hours before serving.
Note: You may substitute a 16 ounce bag of frozen whole strawberries, thawed and chopped, for the fresh strawberries.

The trifle was a hit! I did a search to check on other versions. What I ended up doing was mixing the pudding and Cool Whip so it was really light. I also mixed the blueberries and strawberries with sugar and let them sit for about an hour. The strawberries produced a juice with the sugar, so it moistened the cake a bit. You can also add a dash of sherry or brandy as well. Yum!

Everyone's ideas sound so yummy! I'm in the process of making a jell-o cake. Right now I'm waiting for the cake to cool so I can poke holes and pour the jell-o over it. Then I'll cool it to let the jell-o set. Final touches will be whipped cream, strawberries, and blueberries. Good thing we're having a late dinner; I had forgotten how long jell-o takes to set up!
