I feel dumb asking this seeing as I have 2 kids, but I am at a loss. My best friend has a friend (who I have hung out with twice) that just had a baby. I would normally just send a card, but she sent me a gift when my DD was born. She sent me a gown and a stuffed animal. The problem is that she needs NOTHING - my best friend said that her baby shower was the biggest that she had ever been too - like 75 people. They got all of the practical stuff plus about 100 outfits 0-12 months. I want to send a small gift and have no idea. The only two things that I could think of were a cute sweatshirt size 12-18 months OR a baby Einstein/Lamaze toy - what do you all think?

Thanks a bunch!

How about some SUPER cute custom bibs?

I have a ton from.......

and everyone LOVES them. Matter o' fact my daughter was here with me at work the other day and was wearing one and 2 of my co-workers just placed orders for baby shower gifts for their friends or family.

Clothes for an older child sound like a great idea. I love that there are still a few things in my closet that DS, at age 2, has not grown into which were presents from when he was born.

Books and CDs are always nice gifts.

Maybe small necessaries for later, like a selection of sippy cups and a baby spoon.

Practical bib rather than pretty drool bibs.

Robez shoes.

Our "pretty drool bibs" work WAY better than any other bibs we own (from BRU, Target, Walmart, ect...and it's safe to say we've got at least 50 bibs at home...so yeah, we've tried them all). They are a lot thicker and keep all the milk and drool off of her clothes. They are worth every penny and look fantastic.

I was thinking about bibs for later when they are eating. Then you want something more moisture resistant and with a pocket to catch food that drops, at least we did.

My son did not drool or spit up much and we bf so we rarely if ever used the cuties drool bibs, we also had no use for the cloth diapers and burp cloths and such. Maybe with number two we will. Each kid and family finds something else that works for them.

I am guessing that if the mom got 100 newborn outfits she also got a ton of drool bibs and may need some of the not quite so cute stuff that you need later on. I personally love bumbkin bibs(I don't think I got the name quite right but it is close enough to find the brand if anyone wanted it) for actual solid food clothing protection, but my kid doesn't rip it off till he is done eatting. I know the velcro does not work will for everyone.

I like the toy idea or how about Baby Einstein DVD or even a book..?

I usually avoid DVDs until I know the parents take on tv for infants/toddlers.

Thanks so much!!

Renrel - I liked getting bigger size clothes too, but felt like it might be kind of "lame" because they won't be able to use it for awhile.

BooeyJ2 - Those bibs are adorable - what a great gift and a great idea!

sublime311 - I liked getting a DVD as a gift for my son, but I really don't know this couple very well so I have no idea if they would like it.

I would most likely get books. Another thought - A friend recently sent me some travel size organic baby care items (like Burt's Bees) which are really nice to have in the diaper bag.

Sometimes what seems lame when you get it most appreciated a year down the line when all the other adorable gifts are already packed up and gone. I though it was so weird that I was recieving pants that were longer than my baby was when he was born. 6 months down the line I totally got that the moms who gave me those knew what I would need most and appreciated their experiece choices. But I totally get wanting the gift to be fully appreciated at the time of reciept.

booey-i LOVE those bibs! they have such great fabric choices for girls. i think those are an awesome gift. we use bibs all the time. we have some really great babystyle ones for when we're out and plastic ones for the highchair...you can never have enough. and i got some really great/unique burp cloths that i used forever...those were great gifts also. i used them for everything!

i was given mustela products from a friend...continues to be my favorite bath product for my son. kiehl's has some great baby products as well. you can order those online or find them in most boutiques. also the right start.

I got some stuff for *me* which was nice.

I think books are always a great gift--ones for the baby or about parenting. I bought 2 good ones for myself last week. The are pretty safe as they aren't really about "technique". One is "Baby Play", and had good ideas for age appropriate activities. The other book I bought is "infant massage, a handbook for loving parents", it looks nice and seems to be a good way to connect with your baby.
