View Full Version : Evening primrose oil and B6?

I am going to start taking evening primrose oil to increase CM. I am also going to take B6 to attempt increasing my luteal phase. For any of you taking one or both of these what are the suggested dosages and when you you take them (am or pm). I also read somewhere that once you ovulate you should stop taking evening primrose oil until you start a new cycle. I would appreciate any info any of you might have on these two supplements.

I don't recommend taking the B6 by itself. Take a B-complex instead. B6 needs the other B vitamins to be processed correctly.
I recommend starting the B-complex at a lower dose of 50mg. If after a couple of months you don't notice a difference, then up it to 100mg. I started w/50mg last month. I'm really noticing that my cm has increased and my EWCM is stretchier.
I don't know anything about the EPO. I hope someone else can answer that for you.

There have been some other threads about this, if you do a search. Here's one:
Short LP - magnesium & B6? (http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=3910)
EPO can help CM but shouldn't be taken after O, that is correct. There are some other ways to help increase CM; they're listed in this thread:
How to increase quality/quantity of CM? (http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=6060)
To lengthen the LP usually people take a combo of B6 and magnesium. But be careful going over 50mg of B6 a day, and do NOT go over 100mg, as even 100mg per day can cause nerve damage if you take it for enough months in a row.

Deanna I hope you don't mind, but I am going to hijack your thread for a minute. ;) I have a question about EPO if someone can answer.
I took it when I got pregnant this last time, and that pregnancy ended in m/c. I wasn't charting, so wasn't sure when I O'd but there is a very good possibility that I took it for as long as a week after I O'd (since I wasn't sure.) The pregnancy lasted 7 weeks. I am curious as to what the danger of EPO is -- is it early labor? Or is it m/c? I am now freaking out that taking the EPO might have done something reallly bad.....:(

RileyMom: I've heard that EPO shouldn't be taken after O because it causes uterine contractions.

Thanks Elenna. I never had contractions or anything, as a matter of fact I never m/c naturally at all (had to have a d&c) so it sounds like the EPO was probably not a factor. I just freaked when I read that for a minute because I probably did continue to take it after ovulation for a short period. :(

If you only took it the first week after O, it probably didn't matter in your situation. Implantation doesn't happen until at about that first week or even later. So the problem with taking EPO then is disrupting implantation, which wasn't the issue in your case. Try not to feel guilty, although I know how hard it is. :(

Scooter- thanks. That is reassuring. The baby definitely implanted (we even saw a heartbeat on 2 ultrasounds) so it sounds like it probably wasn't an issue. 2 months later, I am still trying to find a way to blame myself.

Yes, evening primrose oil is definitely said to help with fertility by helping to increase cm, especially around ovulation. I have heard many people swear that evening primrose oil has definitely helped them produce quite a lot more cm that they were prior to taking. So it's definitely worth trying if this is something you need help with. Just make sure to stop taking once you ovulate. And I also have read that the reason for this is that it can cause uterine contractions, so I'm guessing it might prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. As for the B6, I don't really know too much about that, so I'm no help there. But I think EPO is definitely worth looking into.
