We all knew that this show couldn’t sustain so many separate story lines for much longer and keep its audience, so the fourth episode zeros in on a few plots, while neatly meshing others. While this does make for better storytelling, it does have its drawbacks. Millions of heterosexual women settled in on Monday night, hoping for another dose of a buff, powerful Peter, but were disappointed. And there was no sign of Hiro and his epic journey.
However, these small disappointments were easily forgotten in the face of new revelations. Something interesting FINALLY happens with the Wonder Twins of Death, as they meet up with a lost and dying Sylar. His powers are starting to return, and he kills their ride and takes over as their guide to the U.S. once he realizes what they can do. We also meet a new hero in the form of Micah’s cousin Monica, a fast-food worker who can replicate anything she sees on TV. Even though this led to a couple of interesting scenes, it does seem the writers are running out of unique powers. This is right up there with the chick who could email out of thin air.
The theme for this week’s episode was all about protecting the children. Nathan Petrelli fights to clean up his act (as portrayed by shaving his beard and becoming exponentially hotter) so that he can get his kids back. Angela Petrelli tries to protect the next generation of Heroes by confessing to a crime she didn’t commit in order to end the investigation into Mr. Nakamura’s death. HRG tries to keep Claire from what he suspects is a new love (and his instincts are right on), because of the possibility that she’ll reveal too much. Little does he know that she’s falling, quite literally, it turns out, for Hottie McFloaterson. I can’t decide if their love scenes are sweet or squicky. Probably a little of both.
But the truly heart wrenching storyline involves Matt Parkman, his “adopted” daughter Molly, and the father he never knew (incidentally, we also find out that his ex-wife’s baby wasn’t his, which would explain why she’s now the ex). While trying to piece together the secrets of the older generation, he discovers that his father is not only one of the ringleaders, but he’s also the bogeyman of Molly’s nightmares. He asks her to face her fears and locate him with her human GPS locator power, and she agrees, but then gets trapped inside her mind with the bogeyman chasing her. We’re left wondering if Matt can rescue her, or if he’s lost both of them forever.
