In the spirit of honesty, I feel compelled to divulge that the third season finale of Grey’s Anatomy broke my heart. Between McDreamy and Meredith’s unexpected break up and Burke walking out on his wedding to Christina, I spent the entire summer mourning the demise of almost everything I loved about this show. It’s no overstatement to say the fourth season premiere is a make it or break it episode for me.
Still, there were a few story line threads that left me hopeful I could enjoy this new season. Will the Chief and Adele be reunited for good? Will Alex get Ava? What will happen with the Izzie, George, Callie triangle? How will Meredith’s half-sister Lexie further complicate life at Seattle Grace?
So, let’s recap what we learned. Lexie is a dumbass who can’t tell a trauma from a cocktail party. And even though she’s well into adulthood and clearly curious about Meredith, she made no effort to meet her before they had to work together. This seemed a little disingenuous to me until she revealed she didn’t even know she had a half-sister until a few months ago. But I guess we already knew the Greys were one hella dysfunctional family.
George seems to be avoiding both Izzie and Callie. What exactly does this boy want? Does he even know? He seemed panic stricken when Callie brought up getting pregnant, but he is giving Izzie the brush off big time. But then he shows up at Izzie door. And says he loves her, too!
Thankfully, Derek hasn’t given up on Meredith. His passionate defense of her to McSteamy was a clear indication there is a chance for them to reunite and actually make it work. As much as Meredith says she isn’t ready for what Derek wants, I can’t believe the breakup sex is the end for them.
Christina seems to be handling the demise of her relationship with Burke remarkably well. She’s calm and steady, but also a little warmer and fuzzier than she used to be. Maybe the awful breakup is bringing out the best in her.
I don’t blame Bailey even a little bit for being pissed at the Chief for selecting Callie to be chief resident. I still can’t understand his reasoning. Bailey is such a good leader and has the respect and admiration of all the other interns. I know he thinks he is protecting her, but who the heck is he to say how her life should play out? Callie seems totally over her head. Her leadership skills are shaky at best. Perhaps she’ll get the hang of things, but it better happen soon.
Poor, poor George, returning to do his internship all over again. Who would have thought he and Lexie would hit it off. Perhaps mack daddy George will bag another Seattle Grace babe. Anything is possible.
In a nutshell, I’m ready to hang on and see where season four takes us. I’m still bummed about Isaiah Washington leaving the show, resulting in the end of Burke and Christina’s relationship, but there is enough good stuff to balance out the bad.
