***I suppose this winter, I can research some ways to cut down on weeds without the plastic***

A few layers of newspaper (on newsprint, none of the shiney flyers!) and a thick layer of straw over the top. It all breaks down over the winter and is good for your soil!

Actually, I just read that you can use the shiny newspaper as a weed barrier. We have several layers of regular paper as barrier for our mulch beds, but next year, I think I’ll line our garden area with the shiny stuff.

Often the warnings are about the slick colored ad inserts and the magazines such as the Chicago Tribune Magazine or Parade. But in fact, they are safe too. The only extra consideration is that their paper is thicker and often has a shiny coating so photos can be printed with sharper detail. The coating, like the paper and ink, is nontoxic and biodegradable.

You are totally right about starting things early. The past two years we’ve had a late start in our garden - which is nice because we can enjoy shared tomatoes and cukes NOW, and then share our own in Aug. At least that’s what I tell myself as I stalk the tomato blossoms. Next year, I want to plan it out, and join forces with my parents (huge garden) to make sure we’re all covered, veggie-wise. :)

I’m impressed by anyone who gardens. My grandmother had an incredible green thumb but I am doomed to kill any plant I touch. We call it my Black Thumb of Death. :D

The reason that it is not recommended to use shiny paper is because the ink is not soy ink like it is used on newsprint. Non soy in is potentially toxic.

Well, i guess it would have helped if i read all of what you posted.

I’m still not putting down shiny paper because i read as lately as last year in Mother Earth News that the ink on the shiny paper is possibly toxic. Maybe it depends on the printer of the publication. I still won’t chance it in my organic garden.

Our small garden is out of control. Our tomato plants are nearly as tall as I am and they’re so large that they’ve somehow knocked over the trellis we had set up to help contain them. I don’t know what to do now that they’re roaming free. You can’t even see the rosemary bush anymore. And our beans are out of control. I feel such a sense of accomplishment. I just hope our tomatoes turn out well.
