jennylou: The $38 was just for me, and although the USDA would give a family more money depending on the size, it wouldn't be $38 per person. In a way I do think it is easier when you have a few people because there are certain minimum costs you would incur that wouldn't be doubled or tripled by feeding two or three people.

Scooter: I'm so glad you asked about the fruits & veggies issue. I meant to address that in the column and overlooked it. I was able to buy some canned veggies, but that was it. As you might expect, the money didn't go quite as far as I'd hoped it might.

cynder: Thanks for sharing those links!

So, I'm curious, it the figure that you shopped with ($38) for just one person for one week? Would you multiply that per each person in your family? I'm really curious. I could see that being a tough budget for one person, but for three people I spend way less than triple the amount (actually, my total is usually around $60 per week, though some weeks it's closer to $50 or even $40). It's also done with healthy foods in mind - yeah, some times I have to go with frozen veggies, but veggies are certainly better than mac and cheese.

I'd love to try and take the amount allotted for a family of three and try to come up with some healthy meals!

I guess the other perk for us is that we garden, so we have fresh veggies in the summer and we'll have stuff frozen from the garden in the freezer for this winter. Otherwise, our usual food budget would be a bit higher.

Off topic, but if you had to just eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Cheers

I had heard about the politicians who did this, so it is interesting to read your experience. Kudos to you for doing it!

You didn't mention what happened when you went shopping--were you able to buy produce? Were you able to buy enough food to fill you up or were there times you went hungry?

PS- How are emails addressed required on comments being used? Are they for authenication only?

Cool experiment...and what is really sad is that the foods that are low-cost are not nearly healthful enough for us. Mac n cheese, burritos, frozen meals, fast food, pb&j (probably on the cheap white bread from the day-old store)...all nutrient-lacking and carb-filled. Many grocery stores in the poorer areas don't even have fresh produce because it is too expensive for people to buy (and they're the last ones serviced by the produce truck, so they get the stuff that is past its life-span). No wonder we have a weight problem in this country...without access to affordable, healthful foods, people are really set up for failure.

Wow! If your experience was this profound, I hope the governor's experience is as well and he makes some changes for the state of Oregon. As a matter of fact, it should be something that all governor's do. Things could really change for the better.

I remember reading when the governor did that and thinking how crazy it is that families get by on so little. Neat experiment that you did.
