Wanna live longer? Learn more!
I’ve always considered myself a lifelong learner. I wanted to be a teacher, but circumstances steered my education in a different direction. Interestingly enough, I ended up taking jobs that led to educational opportunities. After college I took a job as an insurance claims examiner and ultimately ended up as the trainer for new claims examiners. After leaving that company I obtained a job as a corporate recruiter, and eventually became the corporate trainer. I was starting to see a trend so the next job I applied for was as a training specialist. Before becoming a stay at home mom, I was working as an HR training manager. I don’t know what it was that always pulled me toward the education field, but when I was facilitating a training class, I felt energy like nothing I had felt in a job before. In every training class, I was also learning from my participants. I think that’s what was so exciting for me. Every class was different and there were many opportunities to expand my knowledge base. I was so driven that I obtained a Master’s degree in Distance Education. I was intrigued by that field of study and loved my classes.
Needless to say I was happy to see a recent Yahoo!® news article entitled Ongoing Learning Increases Longevity, Researchers Say. The article supports what researchers have thought for centuries… people engaged in active education live longer, have better memories and are less lethargic. With the advent of distance education programs, the opportunities for adult learners have become countless. I’d imagine that most of us who are involved in online communities, or who frequent the Internet are interested in learning from one another. So when your significant other complains about the amount of time you’re spending online, just tell him/her that you’re adding years to your life.
