You know, I always thought me brushing my dog's teeth a few times a week was sufficient--he's probably never had a real cleaning in his life! I'm sure his previous owners didn't bother since they abused/neglected him anyway. Thanks for the heads up!

What an excellent post. Thanks, Jesvet!

We have our vet keep an eye on the pup's teeth, but it worries me anyway.

Thanks for the heads up. I know I need to have my dog's teeth cleaned but have been putting it off because of the expense. Good to know February might get me a discount if I call the vet now (either way it was a kick in the pants to call). My dog thanks you. :)

We got our dog's teeth cleaned in Fall 2004. At the time, the Vet said we needed to do it ASAP, and I was expecting that b/c my previous Vet had said it would be needed soon.

We unfortunately don't brush his teeth as often as we should. I think he is in need of it again, but financially, we need to wait until the end of this year. I don't think the Vet we are using now really looks as good as they should, and I don't know if they are equipped to even do it.

We try to look to see if the gums are aggravated where the bad build up is, but I don't see any really red places on them. He's not bleeding when he chews his rope bone, either.

Is there anything else you can suggest that we look for to make sure that waiting until November won't put him in a bad place?

When one of my cats was four years old, he had to have all of his teeth removed b/c they had rotted so bad. The vet we had before had looked in his mouth and never mentioned the amount of plague and decay in his mouth. The new doc said there's no way he wasn't in pain. Since then, we've been getting our other cat's teeth brushed yearly. However, as she ages, I'm getting more nervous about having to put her to sleep for this procedure :(
