I’m on duty for tonight’s AI…so here goes nothing.
American Idol is one of my must see shows. I don’t get into the audition shows too much, as it’s just way too painful to watch, but I do enjoy watching Hollywood and beyond shows.
Yet tonight, all I could think after watching was that it was one of the worst hours of my life. Is this season going to suck? Is it just the editing? I know this was really the first time watching the whole way through this season, but I’m just not excited about anyone that I saw tonight.
It started off with all the contestants singing solo for the judges. They were then brought up six at a time and either let go or kept. There really weren’t any surprises in who was let go, and they didn’t really show many of those that they kept.
Next up was the group singing. It was it’s usual chaos. Some fighting ensued, just like it does every season. During eliminations, the judges said that if you didn’t know the words you’d be sent home. And they did just that - for a little while. Then they must have felt like they were sending entirely too many people home so they slowed down on that one, and just sent the ones who really, really didn’t know the words home.
Finally, they put the remainding contestants in three rooms and sent one whole room home. Personally, I don’t understand why they just don’t send all but 24 home, instead, we’ll have to sit through another night tomorrow, where the judges will look through tapes to decide who to keep.
Getting to the top 24 will be good, then we’ll actually get to see more than a few seconds of each contestant. And, like every year, I’m sure someone will emerge that will capture my loyalty. One painful hour will not deter me from watching one of my must see shows, rather, I’ll just remember for next year to skip the shows until the top 24 are announced. Either that, or I need tivo.

My vote is for the TIVO
It sucks that we have to wait just one night to find out the Top 24, but can you imagine being sent home in The Top 40? Then many weeks later, being brought back to Hollywood (again!) to find out that you are eliminated? Too anxiety provoking for my taste, but I can’t sing so it’s all good.
