Now that I’m a new mom, I’m suddenly aware of a new trend of *not* giving pacifiers to babies. When did this happen? And when did the trend turn to scolding moms for using them.
Like many new parents I was pointed towards the book “Happiest Baby on The Block” , and the main concept of the book are the 5 “S’s” – Swaddling, Side Laying, Swaying, Shushing and *Sucking*. The book recommends giving a pacifier to a baby to ease their need for sucking, which is a self-soothing thing that babies do.
So why then, is this book so popular amongst mommies, yet at the same time I’m getting pressured to not give a pacifier?
Now, I understand not introducing a pacifier to a brand new newborn, as they are still learning to breastfed and learning to latch. But there are so many different kinds of pacifiers these days that really mimic the shape of a nipple, that you’d think nipple confusion wouldn’t be a problem.

Well here I am, a brand new mommy, and I have a “sucker”. So unless I want to walk around all day with my pinky in her mouth, I’m giving her the pacifier. So far, she takes it, sucks it, and spits it out…we’re still working on keeping it in her mouth.
So am I a bad mommy for giving it to her? Heck no! I’m just a mommy that’s doing the best she can and not following the trends.
