In an attempt to soothe my infant son, who is currently teething and otherwise miserable, I have resorted to digging through my massive collection of CD’s in order to find some comforting music. After all, if music can soothe the savage beast, surely it can calm an infant?
So far, I’ve had some success with light jazz, classical music CD’s, and (my personal favorite) Pink Floyd. I even bought a CD of video game music from ‘Final Fantasy’—which worked pretty well. But, most of the rest my CD’s are heavier stuff emblazoned with ‘parental advisory’ labels. Not something I want my son to listen to right now, particularly as he’s learning to talk.
Enter Baby Rock Records. I learned about this company from my husband, who thought it sounded pretty interesting, and emailed me the link to their website. Baby Rock Records produce cover versions of many of my favorite bands; Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Tool—and Pink Floyd. Instead of electric guitar & feedback, you can hear your favorite heavy metal tunes performed on vibraphone & glockenspiel. The sound is very similar to Baby Einstein’s Music Box Orchestra CD’s.
I was skeptical when I first heard of this—how good can “Enter Sandman” sound on the glockenspiel? So I visited the website, where you can check out samples of the songs. Surprisingly, I LIKED their renditions. It’s all instrumental, no lyrics are sung–so there are no ‘parental advisory’ type worries for parents!
